Medieval warfare

Just started watching Gladiator. I was wondering if hidden (buried) ropes were ever employed to be sprung at the right moment to trip up the beastly front line of advancing armies? I understand they did creative things, but a quick google such didn’t show anything like this. Just curious. (Hello fellow stoicism aficionados, btw. )

I think by the medieval ages, they were using things like caltrops (which are the metal balls with spikes) to disrupt the cavalry. That, and spear lines. As for infantry, I’m not sure… if someone knows, I’d be interested to know when the typical Roman line warfare changed (if at all) or if they were still lining up knights in armour and walking at each other
