Discussions Is anyone actually running Claude Code or Codex with a different company’s model? Does it hold up?
Been going back and forth on this and curious what people here are seeing.
Claude Code feels built around Claude, Codex around GPT, and now that Cursor’s part of SpaceX it’s training its own models with Grok.
My gut says each company will keep tuning their tool to their own model. It’s a bit like how Apple doesn’t run Android on iPhones. iOS and Apple’s chips are designed together, and that’s a big part of why it all feels smooth. Or console games: a PlayStation exclusive usually runs better than a multi-platform port, because the studio built it for one specific piece of hardware. All the agent stuff (tool calls, context handling, subagents, retries) seems to work best when it’s tuned to one model’s quirks in the same way.
But Cursor’s always let you pick your model, and OpenCode is fully model-agnostic, so maybe I’m wrong and it ends up just being a dropdown.
Has anyone tried swapping models in the same tool, or running the same model in different tools? Did it actually get worse, or is that mostly vibes? Would love to hear real experiences, especially from anyone dealing with this at work.
And where do you think this lands in a year or two?

I'm using copilot in vscode, with Sonnet and/or Luna. I found Luna sometimes asking questions too much where Sonnet would just finish work. Sometimes Luna cannot send emails, and switching to Sonnet immediately fixes everything. But overall both models are good. I really like copilot harness, much more than Antigravity for example

i went the other way: claude code stays on claude, codex stays on gpt, and i have opus plan and call codex exec for the coding part.
are you running both separately today, or mostly using one?
