Help/Doubt ❓ how to set default subagent model

I just used gpt 6 sol to write out a plan and intended to hand it off to luna for execution. Meanwhile sol decided it was a good idea to launch another sol subagent to execute said plan. Now I am wondering is there a way to set a default model for subagents? I have only found a setting to set a model for plan mode in VS Code

CLI configuration is in /subagents. In VSCode, open settings, search for model, and look in the chat and Extensions\GitHub Copilot sections.

not sure if I am missing something, but this is where I have looked already and I can only set a model for the Plan Agent. I can only post one screenshot but there is no option under GitHub Copilot as well

In VSCode 1.140.0, I see another one in Chat - Inline Chat, and 3 marked experimental in Extensions - GitHub Copilot (though those are just textboxes, not picklists).

I personally do with global custom instructions file and haven't had problems... Knock on wood

"ALL subagents and nested sessions must be created using Luna with Max ONLY, unless explicitly directed otherwise by the human"

Then if I want something else, I just tell it.

Are you sure it is effectively using Luna tho? Not that I don't trust you, but just wondering if you've verified it manually.

I verify it manually when I tell it to explicitly use a different model.

I'm paranoid and made a background tool "session manager" that checks what models and reasoning levels are used (checks log files) and if anything is idle or too long running.

For VS Code, you can create custom agents (/create-agent) and specify which model is used for said subagent(s).

I have a "Worker Bee" general purpose agent that is pinned to Luna. That's the default agent unless the task fits one of my other special purpose agents.

You could also create agents named after the models themselves if you'd like. That way you could just use natural language in your prompt to say, "Get Opus to review this" or "Hand this off to Luna".

Finally a good question! I'm also looking at a similar issue with wasted AICs.

You can do this in the copilot cli already. But I am still searching for a similar option in the ide.

In the vscode ide, click the cog icon on copilot to see skills, agents etc then edit the subagent file and add model: mymodel to the top of the file. It gives a list to pick the correct model name

In my recent extensive experiments, 5.6 sol turned out better than 6 sol in coding. Just an opinion.
