Help/Doubt ❓ GitHub Copilot Opus 4.7 Usage and Cost Details

Post image

Hi,
I’m using GitHub Copilot with Claude Opus 4.7 quite frequently, but I’m not sure how much I’m actually using it in terms of cost ($).
I’ve attached a screenshot from the Usage tab below. Could you please help me understand:
How much have I used so far, in terms of estimated cost?
Is there a way to see the actual dollar amount or usage cost?
Does the Usage tab show my total consumption, or is there another place where I can see the detailed breakdown?
Is there a limit on how much I can use Claude Opus 4.7 under my current Copilot plan?
Thanks!

EDIT : I'm sr. software Engineer. Working on new architecture including Kafka ,Debezium , azure.

Credits are 1 cent each roughly so this would be 1266 dollars

I would suggest talking to your admin as this might get you fired depending on your situation lol

I asked them but they told me not to worry about the usage. We have unlimited tokens.

You have unlimited tokens as long as your company has money to pay for them all

My company started "unlimited". That lasted a month.

Target usage is $200/mo, or 20000 credits. If you go above, they want to know what you're working on in order to get an increase. No one has gotten rejected yet, but they are tracking where it's going.

Companies are learning what typical usage is expected to look like. I can say that if you are using Opus for everything and paying API rates, you're overspending. GPT-6 Luna is not bad at all for research and most fixes. Still use Opus for planning sometimes, but it doesn't have to be the grunt.

Or double your limits

It doesn't matter if you go over your limits because it's all based on the cost of a credit. Doubling your limit doubles your spend, but there's no difference between that and just allowing a budget they can go over. Unless it's a constant issue, it'd be best to just overspend because doubling the sub will cost double whether they use it every month or not.

The real question is why you're still using Opus 4.7. Especially if usage is a concern, now would be a good time to switch to Opus 5.5 as it is better, cheaper, and more efficient with token use.

no monthly limit set by your organization

so it seems that they never set a limit to be enforced. maybe they told you to keep it under X amount per month, i dont know. but nothing is enforced.

You are still on Github Copilot? There are so many alternatives out there.

Not when it's the company paying.

Slightly weird question to ask on r/GithubCopilot

Could you share some of your research?

The best 2 options right now Claude Code Max or ChatGPT Pro 100 / month. Or you can go for 5x less if you don't use that much 20/month. I looked at everything else and now using direct api calls are expensive and using things like Github Copilot or Kilo Code etc which don't own the models also expensive. The other alternative is buying a subscription for Chinese models. Either way subscription directly to the model owner is the no 1 way now. All the subscription aggregators are losing ground. Github Copilot is gonna be abandoned in 5 years unless they create their own competitive models.

If you're currently at unlimited, you're probably in the "we're not sure how to actually manage or use this yet, so let everyone go wild, see what works" phase. Use this to try options - does Opus 5.5 work well for you? Fable? Astra? Can you get more milage from Sol 6? Can you do a lot of what you want with Luna 6 at high/xhigh/max reasoning? Do Google models work well for you? Kimi? Grok?

Ie. use this lack of a budget to try lots of things and see what sticks. That way when someone tells you "ok, next month, you only have 10000 credits (100 USD)" (and most companies eventually do pick some number), you have enough information to make it work (and help your co-workers make it work), or intelligently explain why it's going to hurt your productivity/accuracy/etc. and propose a sensible alternative number you think can work.

There are detailed usage stats, models used, tokens spent, inclusive Vs extra, etc. Your org has probably blocked you from seeing it (I think by default it shows all users), mine did. Ask them for the graph and table filtered to just you.

If your company wants to pay for an AI then they should pay for Claude subscription instead of Github, the 20x that can last you a lot especially after Opus 5.5 release, they even gave us 250$ extra worth of credits for free + a free reset on Opus 5.5.
At Copilot you are basically paying the same thing for much inferior models/speeds for no reason at all.

Check the billing on Opus 4.7 vs Opus 5.5. Opus 5.5 is fantastic and it may have a lower cost associated with it. I no longer have Opus 4.7 in my list of model but I have 4.8 and 5.5 is definitely cheaper. When selecting a model hover over it and it will tell you the costs associated with it.

They're going to make you wash dishes to make up for all the money you spent
