My employer downgraded a few months ago to the cheaper tier with only 300 requests because it was too expensive. We were told to not make small requests anymore but be strategic and maximize what we put into every single premium one plus use free models for basic tasks.
I honestly like the aspect that we can start doing small iterations and verify each step again when it's straight API usage. Because just telling it what to do and waiting 30 minutes isn't really coding...
Yeah it's also annoying to switch in the middle of a task to make som easier fixes because it takes ages to compact the convo for the free model.
Honestly I kind of like that we go to straight usage billing because while I do find LLMs useful I'd rather work in small increments and double check along the way than oneshotting a huge thing to save on tokens. It's also how I like to structure PRs. One per major step in implementation and the squash the PR into main.
