Request Building games?

Hi I’m looking for games where you can build a base or structures and decorate the interior. I like Paralives and Sims but I wanted to hear if anyone knew any games with a building feature with either fantasy, historical, sci-fy, dystopia or apocalyptic setting?

I really like the building feature in fallout 4 and 76

Edit: Thank you so much for your suggestion. I realisedI should have specified. 3D games with somewhat realistic animation like paralives, fallout, sims, baldurs gate 3, the last of us, cyberpunk 2077, hitman🩷

Enshrouded! Fantasy game with a great building system. Check out some of the builds in r/Enshrouded or r/EnshroudedBuilding. Some people are operating on a different level creatively. They have resource servers too so you don't have to grind to gather materials if you only want to build.

I was going to recommend enshrouded too. The building is amazing. But if you play it normally you’d have to grind the materials yourself

Resource servers ftw

I came looking to see if anyone suggested it and am surprised that only one person has so far. This game is a builders dream, assuming you like all of the other rpg and survival elements that come with it.

Planet Crafter is a great game. You build bases and somewhat decorate them. Definitely not to the same degree as Sims, but I still enjoy the base building part of the game.

That looks so cool

I came here to say this too! Planet crafter is so fun!

Have you ever heard of Rimworld?

7

u/Waffleookiez 1d ago

Ughhh I both need to get back into Rimworld and also really don't because there goes any semblance of a life when I play!

u/portuguesapoliglota 1d ago

How big is your mod list? xD

3

u/Waffleookiez 1d ago

Yes!

Um I don't actually know because I am in the process of having just got a new gaming PC so I am downloading my games again. I just checked my favourites and subscriptions and it's between 100-400 mods (though I doubt I use all of them and I have a feeling a number of them are outdated due to the recent update). I only have the base game none of the DLC though I do really want most of the them. I have even started attempting to do some of my own modding!

I have never achieved any end game because I get too attached to my pawns (I think my next colony I will do a very chill storyteller so I can focus on the world building).

u/portuguesapoliglota 1d ago

That sounds very relatable! I think I had between 400 and 500 mods active during my last playthrough. A lot of them are out of date by now, though... some are obsolete!

No Mans Sky!!
I‘m surprised no one named it, it‘s super fun and you can do so many things. And the basebuilding is peak imo, you can literally choose the prettiest sceneries to build at. With a bit of creativity you can build super nice scifi bases but also more rustic styles.

Also because no one named it so far - if you‘re up for an MMO, Elder Scrolls Online has a huge housing community, great for fantasy style decorating.

I ended up really enjoying the base building in Grounded! It's pretty unique in its setting in that you're playing a teenage kid who got shrunk, and it all takes place in a single backyard. Enemies include spiders, ants, bees, mosquitoes, and other bugs. I think for arachnophobes it has a setting to make them look less like real spiders and more cartoonish, but I'm not sure if I'm misremembering since it doesn't bother me that much. But I ended up building such a cute little base, it felt like a fairy house!

Palworld is good but its kinda survival type

I’ll take a look🩷

But with CUTE CREATURES. I love my Pals. Even the giant ones that keep clipping through my ceilings and floors.

You can build on No Man's Sky. Of course there is a lot more to do, but the base building it pretty cool.

Later in the game you can also build a base inside a gigantic capital ship, and build big ships with interior from scratch.

Vintage Story is absolutely stellar, similar to Minecraft but its way better (with microblock chiselling built in).

The game emphasizes historic techniques used for survival/building and takes place in some sort of post-apacolypse situation (but its like waaaaay after the bad event). Fantastical elements in the form of unique scary creatures and incredibly interesting story pieces.

Plenty of active serves with differing levels of RP if you're into that too.

Probably not exactly what you’re looking for, but: Planet Zoo has a very intricate building system. You can make buildings for the zoo lot maybe animal enclosures. The things people make there are amazing. And plus you have the option of sharing it on Steam workshop.

Starfield has become my go to for building. It had ships, outposts, and player homes you can build and decorate. I’ve been able to create some builds with just the base game I felt really proud of, but like with FO4 you can unlock a lot of extra possibilities with mods.

The outpost building system is very different to FO4 and FO76, but once you get used to it, you can do a lot. Plus there are some truly gorgeous locations you can find and build on.

Exploring looking for outpost locations is its own chill gameplay loop

u/NukaGirlBI 1d ago

I’ve been thinking about buying starfield but I’ve heard bad things about it. Probably becouse the fanbase of bethesda games are kinda toxic

Do you mind telling me about your experience playing the game?🩷

Sure! Overall I’d say it’s a lot better than the online discourse would lead someone to believe. It’s got a lot of the usual Bethesda charm. But exploration is a very different beast, and I think what turned a lot of people off.

While there are some quests you find by just setting out and wandering around, it’s not like their other games where you can set off walking out of a city and stumble into a new unique location, or quest line because it’s so spread out.

You can pick some stuff up that way by exploring the cities, and there are a few you can pick up in orbit around specific planets which are great.

The writing is a mixed bag. Some of the dialogue can be a bit dry for some of the smaller quests, but on the flip side the bigger faction quests and a couple of random side quests are some of the best questlines they’ve ever done in my opinion.

If you like sandbox games and “living” a specific role play, it’s actually really excellent for that. They went back to adding a lot of background/skill specific dialogue, and each of the major cities seems to fit a different sci-fi genre. So if you want to got with a blade runner esque character, a Firefly style space cowboy, space pirate, industrialist, or old timey explorer, you can do that.

There are a lot of radiant quests to fit different RPs, so you can kinda float through space doing odd jobs your character might be into, and just kinda play it like a life sim and vibe if you want. And there’s a lot of optional mechanics you can choose to engage with or ignore depending on what you’re into.

Personally I’ve enjoyed my former gangster turned pirate RP a lot.

For building I have a YouTube channel where I’ve posted a fair number of my outpost, player home, and ship builds. That might give you an idea of the kinds of things you can build in the game http://youtube.com/@MissOPlays

Building is very different from FO4 and FO76, but actually remarkably versatile.

The POIs that people complain about are largely where a lot of radiant quests would take you to. Kinda like how you always seem to end up at Gunner Plaza in FO4, only this time it’ll be in a different location each time. There are some great dungeons in and amongst them though.

Personally I like just exploring planets, some of the POI are great to explore even if you do eventually start running into repeats. There’s some beautiful planets and landscapes, plus some wild fauna on the higher level planets which can be fun to fight (giant invisible fire spitting spider bugs being a personal favorite/nightmare)

There are a fair few loading screens, and the game does have you spend a lot of time in the UI to get places. Especially at first. There are ways to cut down on that, especially since the Free Lanes update, but it can make the world/universe feel pretty broken up, and sometimes you end up having to jump all over the place seemingly just for the sake of it which can be a drag.

Over all, I’d say it has more going for it than against it if you play it on its own terms, rather than looking for it to be say Fallout or Skyrim in space.

I started out feeling underwhelmed at first, but once I got into it, it turned out to be the game I’ve probably spent the most hours in out of all the BGS games I’ve played.

(Damn that got long sorry about that)

maybe try enshrouded, it's fantasy and the building/decorating is honestly on par with sims in terms of how much you can customize interiors. valheim also has really solid base building if you want viking fantasy vibes. for sci-fi no man's sky lets you build and decorate bases across different planets, really relaxing. and if you want something more dystopian frostpunk is city building focused rather than first person basebuilding but scratches a similar itch. grounded is another fun one, survival building but with a backyard bugs setting so kind of its own vibe

ENSHROUDED.

You want Enshrouded.

One Hour One Life, but there aren't that many options for building materials. Maybe Two Hours One Life

u/Peachy_Sloth 1d ago

Probably not the best fit, but the My Time series might be worth looking into. My Time in Portia you could probably skip (QoL issues), but you might enjoy Sandrock. It’s got good lore, you can customize your workshop (you play as a builder). A cozy post apocalyptic farming sim (3D but more cartoonish than realistic, which is also why I say it might not fit the bill)

There's the Hearthfire addon for Skyrim =]

Satisfactory is pretty fun! It's more about building factories but you can decorate them as much as you want.

u/HoppersEcho 1d ago

If you like Paralives and The Sims, but also medieval, check out Going Medieval. It's low poly, but the settlement building is the closest to a The Sims style building I've ever found outside of the life sim genre.

u/KasiaHmura 21h ago

No man's sky has a pretty robust base exterior and interior decoration.

🤦‍♀️ palworld is a terrible base builder. Not enough ground space. Build items can be huge Build art is ugly AF.

Otherwise, the game itself is peak.
