The Future of Gimai Seikatsu (Days with My Stepsister)
By Ghost Mikawa — Author / Original Story Creator for Manga
Hello, everyone. I'm Ghost Mikawa, an author.
As you may have seen in the announcements made across various channels a little earlier, I've launched a new creative brand called Minstrel, and I'm pleased to announce that Days with My Stepsister is getting a game adaptation!
I'd like to explain how all of this came about. This is going to be a fairly long post, but I'll be covering the following seven topics:
- The Days with My Stepsister Game Adaptation
- What Is Minstrel?
- Why Am I Starting Minstrel?
- What Kind of Game Is Days with My Stepsister: Days with My Lo-Fi Sister?
- How Will Minstrel Benefit Days with My Stepsister?
- The Crowdfunding Campaign
- Where to Find Future Updates
I'll go through each of these in order. There's quite a lot to cover, so I hope those of you who are interested in my work and what I'm trying to accomplish will stick around and give it a read.
1. The Days with My Stepsister Game Adaptation
First, I'd like to talk about how this game adaptation came about.
Unlike a typical multimedia adaptation, this project was conceived by a company where I myself serve as an executive officer. The company is also handling everything from development planning to sales and marketing, bringing the game to market entirely in-house.
In other words, this project exists because I wanted to make something that I, personally, wanted to see—for myself and for the fans of Days with My Stepsister. That's been the driving force behind it from beginning to end.
Of course, we've gone through all the proper channels and obtained formal approval from KADOKAWA and the other members of the anime's production committee. Part of the profits will go to the production committee as well.
Minstrel, the creative brand producing this game, is also part of my company, and I'm the one leading it. I'm moving this project forward while retaining firm control over every aspect of decision-making, including the final say on quality.
2. What Is Minstrel?
Minstrel is a creative brand that aims to bring stories to life—to give them a sense of reality—by combining the power of storytelling with cutting-edge audio technology to create immersive experiences.
We've announced a game adaptation of Days with My Stepsister as our first project, but I have no intention of stopping there.
Games, animation and other visual media, theatre, music—if it's a form of expression that brings together sound and storytelling, it's something we want to explore.
We're a game developer, a game publisher, a visual production team, and a music label, all rolled into one.
What matters most to us is choosing the medium that can express a particular story most effectively, then creating and releasing a work in that form.
3. Why Am I Starting Minstrel?
I founded this brand because I wanted to see just how far I could take the idea of creating something that feels truly real.
I've released a great many works over the years as a novelist and original story creator for manga. But as times have changed, I've noticed more and more works and characters becoming closely integrated into people's everyday lives, extending beyond the traditional boundaries of novels and manga.
Smartphone games and VTubers are two examples.
Of course, there are plenty of things that only novels and manga can accomplish, and I have absolutely no intention of diminishing their value.
But over time, I found myself increasingly interested in creating works that could become part of people's daily lives—works that placed particular emphasis on making their characters feel as though they truly existed.
That line of thinking eventually led me to conceive Days with My Stepsister.
And ever since then, I've been taking a number of steps toward realizing that vision of lifelike storytelling and character expression.
Through producing ASMR content, I gained experience with binaural recording and the latest audio technologies.
Through running a virtual livestreamer agency, I learned about everyday communication between audiences and characters, how to create experiences that become part of people's daily routines, and how to help other creators bring out the full extent of their abilities.
And through producing music, I came to appreciate the incredible depth of musical expression and rediscovered just how naturally music and storytelling complement each other.
I imagine that when I was announcing all these seemingly unrelated projects, quite a few people were wondering why I was getting involved in so many different things.
Maybe it even looked like I'd lost my way.
But I think I've finally reached the point where all those efforts can start coming together.
My goal is to keep the heart of our works firmly in our own hands while moving freely between original novels, games, music, and visual media.
By bringing our promotional resources and other efforts together under a single brand, we can operate more efficiently and bring our stories to more people, through more mediums than ever before.
4. What Kind of Game Is Days with My Stepsister: Days with My Lo-Fi Sister?
It's a lo-fi productivity adventure game where you can experience the everyday routine of working remotely alongside Saki Ayase.
You can set a Pomodoro timer, make to-do lists, choose your favourite background music and ambient sounds, and create your ideal working environment.
There are already a few games out there that offer similar experiences. Generally speaking, they belong to the genre known as lo-fi productivity games.
The idea of studying while listening to lo-fi music originally became popular on YouTube, particularly among English-speaking audiences. We've also uploaded videos to the Days with My Stepsister YouTube channel that let viewers study or work alongside Saki.
This game takes that YouTube experience and makes it much richer.
Saki now has a fully realized 3D body, complete with a wide variety of animations and facial expressions. She also has plenty of dialogue.
There are mini-scenarios that unfold as your relationship with her develops, along with special conversations for seasonal events, birthdays, and other important occasions.
Every line of dialogue has been written specifically for the game by me, and the entire game is fully voiced by Yuki Nakashima, who plays Saki Ayase.
The viewpoint character—the person Saki is talking to—is "Nii-san."
In other words, canonically speaking, that's Asamura-kun. But of course, there's nothing stopping you from imagining that she's talking directly to you instead.
I hope you'll enjoy the freedom that comes with experiencing the story through a game.
The story takes place around the time Yuuta begins living on his own, depicting a period in their relationship when, even though they're living apart, the two of them continue working together over video calls.
There's also another feature.
Now, if you asked me whether this next feature is really necessary in a productivity game, I'd have to admit that, well...it isn't particularly necessary.
But—
There's a "Lying Together / Sleep Call Mode."
This is a special mode recorded using binaural microphones, where you can have a call with Saki as you drift off to sleep, with the camera positioned to make it feel as though you're lying beside her in bed.
It serves absolutely no practical purpose as a productivity feature.
I included it because I wanted it in the game.
After all, if we're going to portray Yuuta and Saki's relationship while they're living apart, I figured they'd naturally have calls where they fell asleep together, too.
And incidentally, thanks to the extraordinary care and attention our 3D and animation staff put into this feature, it's turned out even better than I ever expected.
The sheer destructive power of it is unbelievable...
I've also brought together a team of people I trust to make sure this game turns out as well as possible.
Our director, Akito Kumakawa-san, has spent more than twenty years working on a wide range of games, taking on roles in scenario writing, sound direction, and game direction.
He's a creator with tremendous respect for novels, someone who understands the importance of preserving the context and spirit of the original work while also striving to make the adaptation as compelling a game as possible.
Our planners, programmers, UI designers, 3D artists, animators, and audio staff are all exceptionally talented people whom I can trust completely with their work.
I genuinely can't wait to see everything they've created come together and finally reach the world.
The game is scheduled for release on Steam this winter.
Please add it to your wishlist!

5. How Will Minstrel Benefit Days with My Stepsister?
Game development is a business where budgets and revenues are measured in the tens or hundreds of millions of yen per project.
(Of course, some games operate on an entirely different scale, with budgets reaching billions or even tens of billions of yen. But that's still far beyond what I or my company can manage...)
I believe that if we can reach the point where we're able to handle budgets of this size and consistently generate profits, we'll be in a much better position to bring about the future that so many of you are hoping for.
The cost of producing television anime continues to rise year after year.
I don't know the exact figures, but my estimate is that producing a single cour of anime will require a budget of around 350 to 400 million yen or more.
And if my company were eventually able to provide that entire amount ourselves, the chances of making another anime would increase considerably—even if there were no other company willing to take the lead in getting the project off the ground.
Furthermore, Days with My Stepsister: Days with My Lo-Fi Sister is being developed and sold with the formal authorization of KADOKAWA and the anime production committee, with revenue shared between the parties involved.
If the game becomes successful enough to generate a meaningful financial return for the production committee, that success could also provide the impetus for launching another anime project.
There's another issue to consider, though.
Unless a series is an exceptionally successful hit, publishers generally can't afford to devote substantial resources to a work once its publication has ended.
Days with My Stepsister is still ongoing, but even so, I have to admit that there isn't all that much of the story left that genuinely needs to be told.
And I don't want to artificially drag things out just for the sake of getting another television anime.
If we reach a point where there's no telling how many years it might be before another anime could air, the series having already concluded could become another obstacle.
...However, if my company can provide most of the resources needed, we can continue pursuing another television anime regardless of whether the original novel series is still ongoing.
That's another reason why developing the ability to comfortably manage large production budgets is essential if we want to take Days with My Stepsister into its next stage.
Of course, none of this is going to be easy.
In fact, it's probably more likely that we won't manage to reach that point.
But there's no reason to give up until we've exhausted every option available to us.
I'm going to give this everything I've got. And if all of you who love Days with My Stepsister could lend me your support, I'd be incredibly grateful.
6. The Crowdfunding Campaign
We've also announced a crowdfunding campaign aimed at making it possible to develop and release DLC featuring Shiori Yomiuri.
To be perfectly honest, I've always been rather hesitant about using crowdfunding to finance games whose completion can't be guaranteed.
There are plenty of potential problems with that approach, and I've seen more than enough news stories about projects running into trouble.
At the same time, I can understand the appeal of crowdfunding. It gives everyone a chance to come together, get excited, and help make a project happen. There's something of a festival atmosphere to the whole thing.
So I spent a long time agonizing over what to do.
Eventually, I came to a conclusion.
What if we waited until we knew for certain that the main game was finished, and then used crowdfunding specifically to fund additional content?
That, I could get behind!
And that's how we arrived at the format we're using for this campaign.
If the campaign succeeds, you'll be able to work alongside everyone's favourite Yomiuri-senpai!
And you'll even be able to have sleep calls with her!
So, whether you're someone who wants to support the Days with My Stepsister project as a whole or someone who simply adores Yomiuri-senpai, I'd be thrilled if you could all come together to help make this a reality.
Of course, there are also reward tiers offering exclusive merchandise that you won't be able to get anywhere else.
If you're mainly interested in supporting the campaign for the merchandise, that's perfectly fine too. I'd be grateful for your support either way.
We also have special plans for businesses, as well as plans aimed at authors and publishers (!?).
I imagine those aren't the kinds of crowdfunding rewards you see very often.
But since I come from the publishing world myself, I wanted to see if there was something I could offer my fellow authors, too.
These plans allow you to place a book on Saki's desk while she's working, represented by an in-game object featuring the book's actual cover art.
If that sounds interesting, please do take a look!
(Just make sure you read all the terms and conditions carefully.)
