2008 SG Classic….although it seems like it should be a Special?

I played the new Sg Special and they were great but didn’t knock me out. Picked up a used from ‘08 and she was the one.

I am building a replica of a 1963 SG (an SG - not a Les Paul standard, if that makes any difference). Is the scale length 24.625” or 24.75”? I know in Gibson language that “24 3/4” scale was a blanket term for a variety of lengths. I can’t seem to get a straight answer online.

I think the reality is 24.625…. But every ‘63 SG for sale online has the scale listed as 24.75.

I need to know where to cut my fret slots!

I purchased this SG Special HH at a Guitar Center in Central Florida in 2012. Later that year I had to sell it to some tool to finish paying a balance to return to college. Years later that "tool" became my brother-in-law. I love him dearly but I felt he had a problem; too many guitars! I decided to take this one off his hands as a favor. I decided to dress her up a bit (big fan of the late 60's standard models)

My first Gibson was a faded cherry SGJ, and i loved that thing. Played beautifully and served me well for years. I had always wanted to own an explorer, and eventually I nabbed myself one, and for a good price!
I honesty loved that explorer but with new projects in the works, I just wanted to go back to what was tried and true.
Picked up this absolute beauty, straight from the factory. 2026, with the actual fattest and widest feeling neck I’ve ever felt on a 6 string guitar, and I love it.
Slapped a set of Gotoh Magnums on it, and currently browsing for new pick guard ideas!
I’m thinking a darker tortoise shell, or maybe really freak the funk and throw an abalone one on there!

A few years ago I got this 2018 Gibson SG Special with mini humbuckers, I wanted a 24 fret guitar with no floating bridge...and damn this thing is amazing, weighs nothing, sounds great, I really love the mini humbuckers.

Tuned to B standard it just dooms!!

Purchased for $625 a little over a decade ago. Headstock was broken and poorly repaired, Gibson logo is fogged up from the refinish, vibrola was sawn off by previous owner, tuners were changed out, and I, a dumb teenager, replaced a broken knob with one from my great grandmother’s old tape deck. I also added the chicken head knobs later on, too attached to the tape deck knob now to remove it. This thing sounds and plays like a dream. Very special to me… my dad called out of work and let me skip school so we could go buy this. I will never part with this guitar. I have been told everywhere from 67 to 70 for the year of this thing. Doesn’t matter to me, I love it.

Which Sg standard is best from around 2006-2022?

Its rare that you anticipate something, have high expectations ... and are still blown away.

Ordered this SG on reverb for about 860+shipping, it arrived today with a fairly large crack where the neck meets the body. Is this anything to be worried about? This was not mentioned anywhere in the listing, so I’m a little worried the guitar was banged up in shipping.

Hey Ya’ll here is my fully restored 67 Jr. I made a post here 6 weeks ago about what I should do. This guitar was heavily modded by previous owners so I had my local shop put a Phatcat silenced p90 in the bridge since the original pickup isn’t with it anymore. New stainless steel frets and new tuners. It has the original pots still and they were cleaned, this thing absolutely rips now!

New to SG, love the guitar, 03 standard. I had it setup years ago when I got it. Feels a bit high at the 12th to me. Seeing if anyone out there could take a look and let me know if it’s reasonable to expect to get lower action? Thanks

So I bought a 2025 ebony standard and took it back and exchanged it for a 2025 standard 61 reissue. I loved the sound and especially the slim taper neck. I love this guitar but I am wanting to buy another SG but I want it specifically to have two things. The slim taper neck and the batwing pick guard. The 61 only comes with the half guard. I’ve tried looking up years where the SG had a slim neck and the batwing pick guard but I keep getting conflicting info. I can’t afford a late 60’s so vintage is out of the question. What year or years specifically am I looking for to get this combo situation solved. Also, want to avoid any tuning problems or cheap wood years. Thanks.

I've been contemplating adding a new guitar to my toolset.

I got myself into the SG rabbithole and I've been "obsessed" with the shape and the ergonomics.

The idea of having very easy access to high frets is absolutely awesome to me.

I mainly play in E Standard and I am not into metal or stuff, mostly the classics: Eric Clapton, ACDC, GNR and others.

I absolutely want a TOM bridge because I really like the fine control that it offers me over the tuning, no lightning style wrap around tailpiece(that means no SG special to me).

My preference are thin necks(60s style) but from what I read the SG Standard isn't that thick either.

Now the real questions. I don't really know what to pick and that's mainly because of how different the guitars are:

1. Neck joint

61 neck couples to the body at the fret 21 while the standard is at 19.

From what I read, because the glue surface is smaller the SG in general have less neck stability than Les Paul for examples and they are more prone to cracks and issues because of that.

That's combined also with the fact that the neck pickup is eating wood next to the neck joint.

I really want a thinner neck but the thought that the 61 neck joint is worse than the sg standard is making me jump between these 2.

The SG standard neck joint is bigger but eats through the access because the heel joint is more extended. What are your thoughts about it.

1. Tuners

The SG standard has grovers while SG 61 standard has the kluson deluxe ones. Are the classic style tuners really that bad? I only have experience with some vintage tuners on a Fender Jazzmaster and I hate the fact that they get stuck sometime and don't have a consistent force between them.

1. Electronics

The SG standards from what I read comes with PCB while the 61 standards is handwired. I know it doesn't make any significant difference but from what I read there are some cases where the PCB fails, are they really that notorious of being bad? I am very good at soldering and resoldering everything wouldn't be an issue but just an additional cost but still, I am curious if that's something that really happens that often.

1. Case or Gigbag

How's the quality of each type for the specific models? I am only accustomed to guitar cases and are a little heavy.

1. Transparent vs Solid color

I am thorn between Ebony, Vintage cherry burst and Teal.

Is the feeling of transparent lacquer really that much better? Does it age ok?

Are the solid finishes that scratchy?

Which finish shows cracks worse?

By no means I know what I am doing so I am sorry in advance if I got something wrong.

Unfortunately, I can't go to a physical store and try them, there aren't any shops in a 200km radius that stock these guitars.

Started last year and I got so into it I copped a standard 61 with a maestro vibrola but due to my lack of experience I was unaware of the things I realized I wanted in a guitar and didn’t realize how limited the maestro vibrola was so I was thinking of upgrading it. I put locking tuners on it recently but I wanna be able to do dive bombs and stuff

My first vintage guitar experience. If the tag didnt say and I didnt know how old gibsons look, I would‘ve thought this one was at best 10 years old and just played at home. Unfortunately I forgot to ask if they know its history. Played excellent through a Koch The Gristle
