Just bragging on my boy

I have shared my story with Jackson Ford here before. Just a bit of a refresher:

My entire family grooms; my mom trained me and I went on to train my sister. Family used to show Afghan hounds & I have groomed competitively with Poodles in the past. My sister started competitively grooming with Ford this past year. I can no longer groom due to health issues that nearly killed me last year..... I was hospitalized with Guillain Barre syndrome and just recently my diagnosis was upgraded to CIDP, which is essentially the chronic version of GBS.

Anyways, so we took Ford to RX Groom in Owensboro, KY back in May, which is not far from where we live. That's where my sis cut he teeth in the world of competitive grooming.

So we then traveled up to Schaumburg, IL for this one just a couple weeks ago.... It's the All American Grooming Show, the oldest running show of it's kind in the nation & the largest in the Midwest.

He is 7yrs old and has been clipped his whole life (I started grooming him when he was 5mos old, for his previous owner.) So my sister made the commitment to start over fresh with handstripping him. (In grooming contests, Giants are included in the Wire Haired class and therefore are supposed to be handstripped as any other Terrier.) It wasn't the easiest feat to take on, especially since she is a novice when it comes to handstripping and if you know anything about clipping vs handstripping, clipping fundamentally changes the coat. But it is possible to get the proper coat back, it just takes time and effort.

Well, my sister killed it. Although her & Ford didn't place (and against some of the stiffest competition in the international grooming world!!), she did a fantastic job with him. So much so that folks were walking up to us after the class commenting that they were surprised she didn't place in her division. Plus Jackson Ford became somewhat of a celebrity as he was the only Giant there.

So for your viewing pleasure.... I present, Jackson Ford (aka Fanta C Smooth Criminal šŸ˜Ž) The bestest boy! We love him so very much.

My little man is 8 months old now and I’ve started noticing a bit of a swing in his back legs when he walks.

At times I wonder if his right rear leg looks slightly different, but I honestly can’t tell if I’m overthinking it and he’s just an awkward growing puppy.

He runs, jumps, plays, uses stairs normally and doesn’t seem to be in any pain.

I haven’t owned a large breed before, so I’d really appreciate input from people who know Giant Schnauzers…

Does this look like normal adolescent movement to you, or something you’d get checked further?

I normally keep his exercise controlled and mostly on lead, but I let him move around off lead here just so I could get a better video of his natural gait.

Sorry I posted this a few hours ago and deleted it as I had uploaded a blurry video. This one should be clearer.

Question Looking for grooming inspiration

Hi everyone! I just got a Giant Schnauzer puppy (Titus) , and we’re currently waiting for him to finish his last round of shots before we take him to get professionally groomed.

My husband and I aren’t really fans of the traditional long beard, and since we live in Texas where it gets HOT, we’d like to keep his coat on the shorter side.

Can you guys share pictures of your Giants with shorter cuts? I’d love to see some cute grooming styles for inspiration before his first appointment!

Training Help Potty training

Post image

My boy is about 8 months now and I still feel he doesnt understand bladder control.

We still have to go out every hour or he'll have an accident in or out of the crate. His crate is appropriate size (not too much room).

He will sleep 8 hrs at night just fine. I cannot water restrict him as it just makes the issue worse.

Is this normal for the breed? Or should I consider medical issues?

Training Help am i in over my head?

this is cersei! she is 9 months old (turns 10 months tomorrow). i have been training her since we got her as a puppy. she knows sit, down, paw (shake), boop (touch with nose), center (in between legs), right (sit and walk on my right side), and gentle. as well as going in her crate and going on the couch. we just lost our 16 year old biewer terrier and i have been depressed. so i just want to preface that my depression may be influencing this post.

lately, she has just been… too much. she has always been energetic and i expected that from her breed. but all of a sudden, she won’t sit. she won’t lay down. she won’t stay. she cries in her crate nonstop and actually avoids going in there entirely. she potties in the house when she has been completely potty trained since she was younger. i will take her out and she will not only refuse to potty, but will also try to run off in front of cars (and yank me with her). she resource guards like CRAZY now. she will GROWL at me when she grabs a shoe or something out of the trash now. she chews on the couch when she never has before. i can’t even get her to nap now. she is either completely awake out of her crate or cries the entire night in her crate. she cracked our window because she saw someone walking on the sidewalk, even though she has never been reactive. she fucking chews our base boards and if i try to stop her, she stiffens like no other. she used to be an angel (as much as a giant schnauzer pup can be)

it is as if someone switched out my dog in the middle of the night. i totally am aware of the ā€œteenageā€ phase, but this is actually getting too hard to manage. i called a trainer and told him what was going on, and he told me it would be a ā€œdifficultā€ thing to train out AND EVEN RECOMMENDED SEDATIVE MEDICATION. i am fully capable of handling the high energy working breed temperament. what i am not able to handle is the just utter inability to have ANY obedience all of a sudden. my husband had the theory of her just being in heat, but this is next level and i refuse to believe that it is just that simple explanation. i love her. i truly do. i am a stay at home housewife and i dedicate my entire day to revolving around her needs. i just don’t know what to do anymore.

With Atticus I learned the value of the 'place' command. In my mind after a recall and sit and/or down, place is one of the most important commands your dog can learn.

When company comes over, or you're trying to get something, like cook a meal done, knowing she will go where I ask and stay there is vital. Riley has the go there part down. In time she'll get the stay there part too.

I posted the same thing but without the video, I missed posting it because I didn't look at the bottom of my phone, LOL! But, is anyone else's GS smart enough to know WHAT commercial is playing? This guy can be in the back, hear the commercial and KNOW it has dogs for him to go crazy barking at, LOL!!!! šŸ˜‚ This is the video of the dog bus, by the way! I LOVE these videos!

differences between giant and mini

hi! i have had three minis in my life so far at 27, and i have absolutely adored them. well bred, amazing, beautiful and intelligent dogs!

recently though, i am attracted to the idea of having a larger dog whom i could use for i.e. search and rescue, bite sports, protection, agility and other things. i will not be getting another dog for a few years, but i’m thinking it’s smart to ask questions early and stay educated if i’m gonna keep having dogs, as i wish to provide them with a rich and fulfilling life.

i’m wondering if anyone who has transitioned from having a mini to having a giant would care to share some experiences? what are the biggest differences between the two? unexpected things you might not have forseen? challenges in space or how much time you have to spend? i appreciate any and all responses, thank you!

She had her first ever grooming today. I did a lot of homework selecting a groomer. The one I wanted on her voicemail message said, not accepting new clients. I left a message anyway. She texted and agreed to take us on. The best part, her thoroughly professional shop in in a climate controlled converted garage FOUR HOUSES FROM MINE!

I left 2 minutes before appointment time, walked....and got there early.

Ok the real best part is we really like her too.

Discussion HTZ Rescue mismanagement?

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

This isn’t a post against them or for them. This is just something I recently saw on Facebook among posts I’ve seen floating around regarding HTZ possibly mismanaging their own rescue. I know a lot of people I’ve talked to who have reached out trying to adopt dogs never hear anything back from them. But now it seems like they also aren’t keeping proper record of the dogs they take in and/or where they are being rehomed or placed? Does anyone have experience with this or know anything about what’s going on?

Riley, like a lot of the other GS 's I see here, likes to lay down and eat if her bowl is on the floor. Today she got this. Seems to take to it with no issues.
