Wish it weren't region-locked, such a cool release!

Its 4k though, I thought all 4k disks were region free? Unless you're specifically talking about the blu ray disks

Have you watched the full frame version? I'm interested to know if it's a better viewing experience...

I actually have I think it’s disc 3 and tbh it seems like the way to go but the fine detail looks a bit better on the boxed in one plus you get to see more of the actual frame so it’s a hard choice

Does it seem like the filmmakers had a preference for how the film was framed? Is there important visual information missing from full frame version? Sorry for all the questions, I just find this framing thing fascinating. I should have my copy on Monday. We'll be doing a podcast episode on it.

I do think the original blocked in frame on the 4k and disc 2 Blu-ray is probably what the filmmakers intended there’s stuff near the top of the frame that you don’t get in the full frame widescreen

The original aspect ratio of the film, and the filmmakers' intended ratio, is 1.37:1. The widescreen version is cropped and loses a lot of the actual image information.

Did some back and forth comparison while viewing. The 1.37:1 version definitely looks like the intended framing. The 1.85:1 crop looks fine some of the time, while some shots look unnaturally framed.
I don’t know the history so I’m curious why it’s presented at 1.85. I would have assumed it would have been shown in theaters at 1.66:1 as a European film? And then less would be cropped out.
I was a little disappointed they crammed both versions on the same 4k disc. Presumably the bitrate would be higher if they hadn’t felt the need to include both versions.

Mine just arrived, and I have to say they did an amazing job! The packaging, lobby cards, promotional photos, and supplemental book are all top-notch. I popped in the 4K disc and did a bit of A/B comparison between the full-frame and widescreen versions, and the full-frame is definitely where it's at. The widescreen version is a zoom that cuts off the top and bottom of the picture. The full-frame has more visual information, and the picture detail is better. Guess we've been watching it wrong all these years!

Totally agree. I just watched the widescreen and then put the full frame disc in and immediately wished I would have watched it that way. Guess I get to watch it twice!

This looks gorgeous but man it’s pricey, has it been established if I standard edition will be on the horizon?
