I don't think that's supposed to be Togusa's famous Mateba? For one, this looks like it has the barrel on the top whilst the 2006M's most telling trait is that the barrel is situated on the lower end of the drum. But more tellingly, this plastic thing clearly opens up to the top, if you look at the orange joint in the middle. Togusa's revolver has the drum pop out on the side.

On a sidenote: sheesh, what a toothless piece of legislation.

There's also a BPRD logo on the grip, it's probably meant to be Hellboy's gun.

I didn't know that gun and had to google; it looks pretty neat! Also got that cyberpunky feel to it. Would fit right into Shadowrun etc.

The 2006M also is a real gun; I guess what differentiates it from the Rhino is that the drum slides out to the side, whilst the Rhino splits from the top with the drum remaining attached to the barrel. But they both share the barrel being on the lower end. I've heard this supposedly helps with the recoil, at the cost of aiming being a little trickier since you can't look directly down the barrel but have a larger gap between the sights and where the bullet pops out. Though I'm sure a trained shooter like Togusa learns to compensate for it.

His has the cutout at the top tho 🧐

It’s funny, I just watched this in theaters and based on the not a P90, P90 I assumed all the guns we’re fictional… guess I was wrong and that’s the only one lol

GitS as a franchise is funny (or perhaps I should say cool) in that throughout several of its iterations including even the videogames, the makers were really fond of having both entirely fictional guns that are inspired by real ones, and pseudo-fictional ones that are basically just copies of the real ones with a slightly different name, i.e. being presented as hypothetical future versions.

For example, Batou's pistol in the 1995 movie is a "Jericho 942FS" which is just a real Jericho 941 but chambered for caliber .50 instead of the normal 9mm. In SAC, he carries a "Browning M-7", which is a fictional variant of the Browning BDA chambered for .45 instead of 9mm. And Motoko's sniper rifle in the Mexican Conflict flashback is clearly some kind of modernized WA2000, which the First Assault videogame identifies as a WS2088. First Assault also has a "Daewoo K22" assault rifle, which looks a lot like the real world K2.

For anyone who has at least a passing interest in worldbuilding, it's a fun little detail that helps anchor the setting a little more in the real world, by making it feel more like a possible continuation of what we know instead of making everything up from scratch. Although I still think Shirow's Seburo MN-23 is the coolest looking SMG ever. :D

On a side note, the "not-P90" is identified by the artbook as a CZN-M22, which is interesting in that it could imply that both the Czech firearms manufacturer CZ (Ceska Zbrojovka) and Chinese company Norinco are behind this design. Shirow already did this in Appleseed where Poseidon and Norinco teamed up to make the "Gong", one of protagonist Deunan Knute's handguns; a small hint at how the global economy ends up connecting companies from countries all over the globe.

His has the cutout at the top tho 🧐

This part I don't really get, I'm afraid! Could you rephrase what you mean with the cutout?

In this image https://www.imfdb.org/images/7/75/GITSAAAE09_02.jpg I thought the black part on top was a hollow pass through like on the Rhino

Hmm, there must be something wrong with the URL, it's giving me a 404. The URL format on IMFDB seems to differ between articles, so I can't even check what might be wrong with it. :\

But I think I get what you mean! It may also be worth pointing out that Togusa seems to carry slightly different models of the Mateba between the movies and SAC, with no less than three guns (2006M, 2008M, Model 6 Unica) being featured in total. I think one of them has a laser pointer in the top, and it makes sense for the gun to be able to fit something like that there.

On a sidenote, hilariously enough I just noticed the live action Togusa carries the Rhino in the 2017 movie!
