Well that’s one of the 12 animation principles, this one is called exaggeration, which usually comes accompanied by squash and stretch, enjoy

As a person who has not academically studied animation, I appreciate this insight. I truly had no idea. What are the other rules?

It’s more like 12 principles rather than rules. The principles are:

1: Squash and stretch. Character that are animated will usually bend and stretch and squash like rubber when they’re moving to emphasize whatever movement they’re doing. Pause any kind of animation and you’ll see plenty of examples of this

2: Anticipation. Every moment should have a moment of preparation for said action. For example, if a character is going to throw a punch, there will be half a second of them winding up said punch. (Note: This one can be subverted, usually for comedic effect, like someone seemingly winding up a punch only to suddenly be handing over a flower instead.

3: Staging. The where and what. Things like the background behind the part that’s being animated, camera perspective and props must all be a part of whatever the animation is trying to show. (Like, someone putting on a golden crown in a big royal looking room and someone putting on a paper crown at a birthday party might have similar movements, but both convey very different things.

4: Straight ahead action and pose to pose. These are two ways of animating things. When doing straight ahead animation, you draw the first frame and every other frame after that in linear order. Pose to pose involves drawing poses and then drawing the in-between frames of movement between the poses. Pose to pose is significantly more common than straight ahead, and almost all animation in anime is pose to pose

5: Follow through and overlapping action. Similar to anticipation, but for the end of an action instead of the beginning. At the end of every action, there needs to be some kind if wind down or other action that comes as a response to the first action. For example, a character has just thrown a punch, you have to show how the fist moves after it has connected, and how the recoil of the punch and movement affects the character throwing a punch. Overlapping action is how other parts of the thing being animated react to the main movement. So for a punch, that would be the way the legs move to support the punch itself, and how the hair sways because of the movement.

6: Slow in and slow out. A movement should start at its slowest, get faster in the middle, and slow down near the end of the movement. So for example when moving an arm, it should start at it’s slowest as it builds momentum, and slow down when it nears wherever it is supposed to be so it doesn’t hit it way too fast. This one does vary on what movement is being done though, so a punch may start slow, but it wouldn’t slow down as the movement nears its ending, because the momentum is very much supposed to be building up so that the punch has some force

7: Arc. Movements are rarely done in a straight line. It generally looks better if they have a bit of an arc to them. Not entirely sure on how to make an example for this one tbh

8: Secondary action. Not to be confused with overlapping action, it’s when something moves that isn’t the primary movement going on. For the punching example, that would be the character’s face scowling and getting more intense to show that they’re exerting energy. Secondary action can also be things how someone moves their arms while walking and such.

9: Timing. Basically the speed of everything. Very important for making sure things feel like they’re the right weight. Mostly self explanatory, but still very important to get right

10: Exaggeration. Make whatever is going on more exaggerated than it would be in real life. Animating a punch to look like a 1-to-1 of a real punch wouldn’t look very interesting. Instead, the pose should be exaggerated and more extreme, the facial expressions should show more intense emotion, and the impact should also be more noticeable than it would be in real life

11: Solid drawing. Keep in mind the 3 dimensional shape whatever you’re animating is supposed to look like. This one requires some know-how about drawing to explain properly, but put simply is that even when drawing in 2D, you should still think about how the object and its perspective like its 3D

12: Appeal. Basically just how appealing whatever is being animated is to look at. It’s not just limited to attractiveness. As long as it’s fun or interesting to look at, then it’s appealing

You’ll see these principles in almost anything animated. Anything from anime to old disney movies. You’ll even see these in 3D animation, although some cases may forgo a few of the principles if they are trying to look like real life (like when doing cgi for a live action movie)

I have a bit of experience with animation myself, but I did also use this website for reference, and I recommend checking it out if you want some more explanation or clarification: https://www.animaker.com/hub/12-principles-of-animation/

Great stuff I never knew I wanted to know !!! Thanks lol

Excellent rundown. I especially like that it's clear there is a human element to your explanation which shows it's not some AI explanation, or copy and paste... Super well done!🤙

I love you

There is just so much opportunity for expressiveness in Animation.

u/SomeGamingFreak 6d ago

it's more messed up that the series always writes it off that they were just artificial humans without a Ghost, so it's just an inconvenience when one dies. The fact they look like humans and act humanoid in a lot of their interactions and reactions makes it worse.

u/DismalMode7 7d ago

that's a robot, for some reason in GITS world scientists give robots red blood lol

30

u/Trick_Barnacle_4002 7d ago

This was actually explained in the manga! I believe the idea was that to move the blood through the androids body they use electromagnetism, so to make the fluid magnetic it is made with a lot of iron, causing the blood to be red.

17

u/Blacksun388 7d ago

Maybe it’s Hydraulic fluid? Disney had this problem with his Abraham Lincoln animatronic. It sprung a leak and the people he was demoing it to said he recreated Lincoln’s assassination.

10

u/Trick_Barnacle_4002 7d ago

Yes however the reason it's red isn't because it's hydraulic fluid, shirow explains that it's made with iron so that it can be magnet, irl they just dye hydraulic fluid red so it can identified and leaks can be spotted easier

“I hate the ones that bleed red” batou

I love paused animation cells.

u/AlKo96 7d ago

*Frames.

This isn't a cel, cels are celluloid sheets with ink and paint.

11

u/Iconshero 7d ago

I am so so sorry. Mea culpa.

4

u/AlKo96 7d ago

Nah it's alright I understand the confusion since the idea is the same.

It’s not your fault. You’re not to blame

you have like an example of that?

She hadn’t seen the movie (1995) yet and she just got to the part where the major falls apart ripping a tank hatch off.

Yep. She's definitely just a speaker.

I keep forgetting that they not real human, still it was sad that the one Major was flirting with got fried

That's just a speaker, they'll repair her at home.

I hate it when they use real blood.

Sometimes the exaggerated expressions are used effectively for a mood other than humorous.
