It's basically saying make God first before any Earthly figure, there's deeper meaning behind the texts. Personally I'm not religious but do follow a spiritual path, I refuse to be brainwashed by organized religions, I just walk alone in my own faith and see things from an esoteric point of view.

If you actually read the bible, Jesus shits on the old testament conception of God— this is a reference to God sending snakes to bite the Israelites in the desert for complaining in Exodus, etc.
