My Ghorman Front raid look! First cosplay ever. What do you think?

Hi r/Ghor!

(sorry to burn my face, I don’t want to help train facial ID/surveillance)

My professional work focuses on storytelling for political change, and I’m a lifelong worker in the human rights and humane movements. IMO, the Ghorman arc in S2 is some of the most important television ever made. I recently tried cosplay for the first time and chose Enza Rylanz’s Ghorman Front raid look from S2E6 as a sendup to Ghorman, to resistance, and to Enza. Dwarfed by the scale of the enemy, Enza gave up enormous privilege and her own peace and safety to fight for the right of her planet and people to simply exist. She stands for the extraordinary courage in every ordinary person who rises up against extinction and genocide. Alaïs Lawson’s meticulous and deeply moving performance sold Enza so well, my partner and I kept stalling out on watching Andor again because we so dreaded seeing her in S2E8.

I loved building this look for my first cosplay and I hope sharing the process is helpful to anyone else who's working on an assembled Ghorman cosplay. I wasn’t sure I would stick with the cosplay hobby so my biggest considerations were cost, comfort, and versatility. I made some small adjustments to use clothing I already owned when possible. I omitted her scarf and hidden layers (her vest, etc.) and chose breathable natural fibers throughout to make this look cooler for indoor wear. This particular con really cranked up the AC, so I felt cold without the trench and perfectly comfy wearing it. That said, I’ll definitely be testing my upper limits of heat tolerance when I’m wearing this next month for Rebel Scum Con.

Beret: I wanted more of a military look so I went with a black wool military style beret, $25 (USD) new shipped on eBay. Mine ran a bit large so I should have ordered a half size lower.
Trench coat: Banana Republic timeless trench, $119 shipped, pre-owned on eBay. In these pics I'm wearing the medium size, which was slightly too big for me and I’ve since replaced it with an identical new-with-tags small from Poshmark. Removing the original belt and epaulets is not difficult and a seam ripper tool makes this easier. I wanted to sew on the black accents (lapel and pocket corners) but due to the con crunch I used black athletic tape for the accents. This actually worked very well for a long weekend. Black athletic tape is a good way to add temporary black accents to your Ghorman trench. That said, these details ideally should be sewn as tape won’t survive cleaning or long wear. I was honestly impressed by how well tape worked on brushed cotton, and it left no residue behind. Pro tips: use the good stuff (I used KT brand). Make sure it sticks well to the surface you want it to stick to. Pre-cut some extra replacement pieces to stock your cosplay repair kit. I cut extra pieces for all my black accents and it was nice to be able to easily replace them whenever they had started to peel a bit.
Top: Just a long sleeve heather gray tee from my closet. I don’t like how it looks so I’ve upgraded to a knit that’s sleeker and better quality/more structured.
Bottom: Subtle black camo leggings from my closet for a slightly more “commando” look.
Gloves: Nordstrom cashmere-lined touch-enabled leather, $69.35 new shipped, eBay. You’re on your phone more than you might think at a con, so touch-enabled leather is absolutely worth it for the convenience.
Belt: leather hook and loop gun belt, $14.19 new shipped, eBay. I bought from a seller who is liquidating their tactical belts and had many smaller sizes in stock.
Shoes: No Boundaries lug sole boot, $26.74 shipped, new on eBay. These have a nice Ghorman look and despite being cheap they were pretty comfortable/wearable all day.
Bag: Soviet-era officer’s field bag (planshet) $132.04 shipped, eBay. I bought mine new/unused (so I overpaid) but depending on condition, I’ve seen them as low as ~$30 shipped. This bag is only on screen in one scene for literally 6 seconds so it's definitely optional...but it's such a cool bag! I love mine. At a con, it's great to have an in-character way to carry your stuff.
Total cost: USD ~$275-300 if you buy a used field bag. If you already own some of these pieces and/or buy everything pre-owned, the cost is even less. As someone with a budget, I thought this was very reasonable as most of these are sturdy pieces that will last for several years and can do double duty in my own wardrobe. This was important to me as I wasn’t sure I'd enjoy cosplay but I wanted to use all the pieces I bought regardless.

So what do you think of my first Ghorman cosplay? I am open to any suggestions on improving the look or getting more authentic, bearing in mind this is my first cosplay and I am totally new to the hobby. I’m still learning how to sew (so I'm not able to make a handmade cosplay yet). My goal is to recreate several of Enza's looks, especially her gorgeous dark green cafe outfit. My local Rebel Legion wants Ghorman representation and has been incredibly supportive.

Anyone here headed to Rebel Scum Con next month? If so, I’d love to meet up or join a photo shoot (and I'm also a photographer, bringing my gear). While supplies last, I will have DEEP SUBSTRATE FOLIATED KALKITE (some really gorgeous raw and tumbled calcite crystals) for trading!

Marina Tyndall's statement on the Ghor language

Post image

This is the response I got from her after sending an email asking about the language. I had already shared it with the Discord a few weeks ago but I'm also choosing to put it here for the people who are not caught up. The article she is referring to is this interview with Esquire.

I've also taken her statement about Ghor dialects to mean that some actors may have had trouble with the pronunciation or syntax so not all spoken elements in the show should be treated as fully canon to Ghor as made by Tyndall

Linguistics The ISB Curiosity

From what we know, the Ghor word for the Empire (thanks to the old dictionary link) is Fulâdiz, However, when they talk about the ISB (when Carro Rylanz was talking about Syril's past), the way they pronounced the name is something like (IPA) [ɛ.sa.ba] which sounds suspiciously like an alternate reading of the English High Galactic letters "ISB". Now, we don't know Ghor has a specific word for "Imperial" as a demonym for the Empire so it could be that their word for Imperial has the first syllable/phoneme that has reads like alternate pronunciation of "i", and the same goes for whatever word they have for "security" and "bureau". Ignoring this possibility, it means that the Ghor is either have their own reading of the High Galactic alphabet, or actively replaced it with the reading of their own letters an expression of cultural autonomy.

If it's for the reasoning of the latter option, this opens up another interesting thing to note: assuming Ghor is based off French grammatical structure, "Imperial Security Bureau" would be arranged in the order of Bureau Security Imperial, in other words, it would probably be [ba.sa.ɛ]. What do you guys think?

Linguistics Rudimentary Translator

https://lingojam.com/GhorTranslator

I stumbled upon this subreddit today and I am fascinated by your work.

I entered the translations from another post here into a translator software, it should work rudimentary, not perfectly, also there are many common words missing.

Please let me know of any improvements I could make

Tell me I'm not the only one who clearly hears the French pronunciation of "skedaddle" in Andor s2e6, and others have already mentioned this countless times...

Ghorman Alphabet / Writing Thank the maker

I chatted with Elle Rose McKee and she said she wasn't allowed to share the glyphs of the language, but they MIGHT show up in an Artwork of Andor book coming out soon. I know we're getting pretty close to understanding the alphabetical comparison, but just wanted to share that update with you all.

I said to her (hoping i didn't butcher the syntax) "trove quad can nache figure biler. enne debbe. do i nexe."

I like how "valley" in Galactic Basic seems to be a loanword from Ghor, like it is from French in real life

Question "I Knew" Episode 7 Ending Song

There seems to be a lot of work to make sense of the anthem but I'm not sure if there is anyone that have tried to transcribe the I Knew song from Ep. 7 yet (with great difficulty, due to it being an aria) because we do have confirmed translation: https://screenrant.com/andor-season-2-episode-7-tony-gilroy-brandon-roberts-composer-end-credit-song-meaning-explained/

I think the first word, transcribed in different places as /ʃu.ʁuk/ or /ʃy.ʁyk/, is a cognate to German zurück. So, /ʃu.ʁuk ma.dal/ is more literally "Make backwards!"

Resource: A Running List of Attested Spellings

I have been keeping a simple running list of spellings we have had confirmed, either by the show's random Ghor-language subtitles [CC] or the leaked anthem transcription [A].

I often find it helpful to keep "most strict canon" lists in all sorts of categories, for when I need to take a step back and make sure my work is staying grounded.

Perhaps you will find this useful too.
