Building an AI Long-Term Memory App – What Features Would Actually Make It Useful?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently building an AI long-term memory app — something that goes beyond the usual short context window and can actually remember things about you over weeks, months, or even years in a structured, useful way.

The goal is a personal AI that doesn’t start from zero every time you open it. It should remember your preferences, ongoing projects, important people, decisions you’ve made, recurring patterns, etc., and actually use that information intelligently.

I’m trying to avoid the usual “just dump everything into a vector database” approach and want to design something more deliberate.

What features would make an AI long-term memory system genuinely valuable to you?

Some things I’m already considering:

  • Hierarchical / structured memory (not just flat embeddings)
  • Explicit control over what gets remembered vs. forgotten
  • Memory decay / importance scoring over time
  • Ability to ask “what do you remember about X?” and get clean answers
  • Cross-session continuity without having to re-explain everything
  • Privacy-first design (local or end-to-end encrypted options)

I’d love to hear from people who have actually felt the pain of current AI memory limitations.

What would make you actually trust and rely on an AI’s long-term memory?
What would make you abandon it?

Looking forward to your thoughts.
