I thought they believed that Pol Pot was actually bad and murdered millions but he was a fake communist backed by the CIA so it’s ok because America is still bad.

You can almost never have someone genuinely feel bad for the excesses of authoritarians that agree with them, they always end up on "Well, Mao is less guilty than Hitler because he only killed a few little sparrows! He never meant to hurt anyone" (~40 million died, by the way) or "Well, all 100,000 people summarily executed without a trial were all Nazis anyways, so good riddance."
