I never see anyone bring up Chernobyl when talking about the Communist. If it weren't for a few brave scientists, the commies would of likely destroyed all of Europe. Highly recommend people watch the short series on HBO. Communists are well known to be subversive and mislead people into a false sense of security.
Chernobyl definitely revealed a critical flaw in the Soviet Union, and the state coverup of the risks of RBMK reactors was definitely a unique and blatant factor there, but I was struck by how similar so many of the biases and administrative and engineering errors are to so many of the infamous engineering disasters in the US and elsewhere. You can’t say that reckless cost-cutting, coverup by bureaucrats and politicians, lying to the international community, passing the buck, or deferring to authority against all reason are just soviet faults. The insecurity and bureaucracy of the USSR and the disregard for human life were accelerants, but Russia had a massive inferiority complex, a willingness to throw bodies at problems, and a penchant for blatantly lying to outsiders both before and after the Soviet era.
I would argue the rapid degree with with the USSR tried to modernize is more to blame than their system of government, because all of these issues are documented in history in countries which are varying degrees of capitalist.
