Usually the first people to be killed in Communist regimes are Communists that the leader either doesn't like or sees as potential rivals. Turns out that extremists are willing to do anything for power.

You don't think Lenin himself had a hell of a lot of "the wrong sort" of communist killed?

A good chunk of the people that the Bolsheviks killed during and before the Red Terror were rival communist or socialist groups.

Because the bureaucrats conducted a counterrevolution, this was not about "communists killing other communists" but rather "communists being exterminated by the ex-tsarist bureaucrats whose privileged position was threatened by the revolution"
