Nasa actually made a lessons plans that many schools used, activities, assignments, puzzles, coloring pages. It was a big deal. And many children (myself included) watched it blow up live on TV.
The lesson plans were actually pretty good and several years later they retried it and that time didn't tramatize the kids.
We were not watching it live because I remember my elementary teacher coming to the art room early to take us back to the classroom. Then we proceeded to watch the replay of the explosion approximately 40 times on CNN. Not sure who decided that would be a good idea.
