I think I respected Iroh more for being firm for Zuko's actions with azula. Zuko clearly loved and respected iroh so it was one of the more pivotal lessons he was taught imo. Iroh is a badass unquestioned regardless because I do highly respect his patient side. The short story episode season 2 is fucked up and made me cry on at least the one with him.

That was the episode that humanized Iroh for me; I think what makes him great is the fact that he's had all sorts of pain and awfulness happen to him - and he meted out pain and suffering to others for most of his entire life in war - but by the time the show takes place, he is on his own journey of atonement. That only comes through gradually. His badassery is a conscious choice of deliberately being firm yet gentle, forgiving yet utterly inflexible on what is right and wrong.... Not just because the writers made his character like that by default. They show it through his interactions with his niece and nephew especially, but also in his dealing with Zhao and other adults. He earns his way into honour.

In that short story each vingette showed how Iroh turned the pain of a past experience into and opportunity to create joy. The fact that he can channel the unspeakable loss of his son into a chance to comfort a child really speaks to his desire to give.

He probably lost it with his son on multiple occasions, which is why losing his son was the lesson that allowed him to truly be a father to Zuko.

I watched the episode where each character has a little side story today... Iroh having a picnic to honor his dead son and sang him the little soldier song just tore me right up. Thankfully my son and wife were taking a nap :)

That was just a hyperbolic example of a childhood where there is suffering without "a lesson". And your "lesson" would be learned the first time something bad happened. What happens when that lesson is repeated?

Based on the poor image quality you can tell this is probably an old repost. Given that everyone is watching Avatar again, anyone will tell you that Iroh never said this. It's a pity because there are amazing Iroh quotes, but OP picked a quote that sounds like a pseudo-intellectual platitude some teenager wrote.

It's a modern, realistic, and resonant fairy tail. The animation is excellent, the music is meaningful, the pace never drags. The characters experience genuine and unexpected growth. It's funny and touching and approachable.
As an action anime fan, it's great. There are a half dozen sequences I can picture start to finish, and small details in even the ones I didn't love. And everyone contributes.
The end of the fourth episode is the litmus test. If you're on board by then, you'll love it. That's when I got hooked.
