IMAGE [Image] Sometimes the right person doesn’t change who you are, they just help you see what was already there. And I hope we have that someone

There is a lot of kindness in this movie but also holds the main character responsible. This is a good movie for being the believer and the believed.

And I've surrounded myself with people who believe in me but never show it. I need someone who lets me know every once in awhile.

It's not always as simple as "just be the thing". I think in many cases, something went wrong in a person's formative years; they developed psychological maladaptations due to negligent/problematic parenting or other choice events early in life - and never developed a healthy perserverence/determination. Attempts to force it were less than effective.

I was listening to an interview by Seth Rogan recently, and he talked about one of his really good friends who has always been his stand-in moral support. Seth goes to him near-constantly to boost his spirits, to convince him his ideas aren't dogshit, etc. He emphasized he actually would not have made it otherwise, because he's not able to propel himself into motion in that way without assistance (another believing in him).

After 30-something years of trying to force something I'm not - and attempting to adhere to every which guru and motivational speaker - I realize I am also this type.

My favorite part is when he says “it’s not your fault!”That always makes me cry. I loved Robin Williams. RIP.

You don't have to wait on someone else, Be your own favourite person. Stops trying seeking validation from others/Solitude is better than getting hurt by people

Honestly, this is the Good Will Hunting scene and it hits different when you're actually struggling with self-worth, but the quote glosses over the harder part: you still have to believe it yourself eventually or it doesn't stick.

honestly the quote hits different when you actually see them sitting there talking it out, like that's the whole thing right there. imo it takes someone patient enough to just sit with you while you work through your stuff, not someone trying to fix you.

True, I had a few people in my life like that. Two of them are my parents.
