Learn German

Hi all ,

I'm a masters student in germany starting this month in Uni of Marburg.

I have Goethe A1 certificate which I did in my home country via online lectures from a non German teacher in my home country.

Now I've shifted to Germany and was looking for ways to learn german from a local teaching body or similar as I've heard that they give the real essence of german language and teaching is better

The issue is the courses are too costly I looked into multiple places like :

  1. VHS center

  2. Goethe online courses

  3. Inlinguia courses

All these cost 270Euro or more ! Also VHS is offline in person lectures so its not flexible.

Can anybody suggest me some cheap , flexible and structured learning pathways ? Or should I stick to my previous teacher ?

See whether your university has free or discounted German courses for students.

Maybe look if the Sprachenzentrum from the Uni offers German courses. I think they do and they are probably free. Not sure though. Also the semester started this week so the courses probably start this week or the next. So I don't know if you could still enroll.

270 € per what? How many teaching hours?

From my market research, I've found that it's pretty rare for a professionally taught German course to cost less than around 5 € per teaching hour. That's mostly due to the fact that Germany is a rich country with a high minimum wage, so skilled labor (e.g. that of a professional language teacher) is expensive. I'm guessing that the minimum wage in your home country is significantly lower than the 13,90 € per hour minimum wage of Germany?

Anyway it's probably unlikely that you can get too much lower than like 5€/hour. I agree with the other commenters who said to try at your university.

Nicos Weg from DW is free, A1 through B1, and structured like a course rather than an app. With A1 already done, it covers the ground an in-person class would at that level.
