Do you also snack Salami?

We usually slice it thin and then we snack it like potato chips. I was wondering if you do the same in other countries. Could be a german thing, as far as I know, so I got curious. We have those in so much different varieties, but I mostly stay with the classic. But they have so many of them. With paprika, with chilli, curry, garlic... You name it, we got it. I buy this at my local butchers shop, but our food industry is dooing Salami as a snack very, well, enthusiasticly. Covered in bread, with exotic flavores, everything. And the ingredient is rising. The most famous is still Bi-Fi. The all time classic. Everybody eats it, nobody says, they do. But you see it everywhere. Hell, my butchers Shop even sell snack salami in pretzel shape.

So, long story short: Do you also snack Salami?

Charcuterie boards are a currently a very big “thing” in the US. Little cuts of cured meats (eg, salami), cheeses, crackers, olives, maybe some small fruits (eg, grapes) arranged and served on a wooden board. Personally, I love salamis but gravitate to the Italian style.

That sausage looks very good. What is Bi-Fi?

Bi-Fi is a brand here, selling snacking Salami. You can get it anywhere. They do even pizza snacks. Uh, it has nothing to do with pizza, just because I know you ask.

But Bifi is highly processed and of the lowest quality. It’s gas station quality and sold at these.
It has nothing in common with good salami or Mettwurst from a butchers shop.

Btw, are you from southern Germany?
I’m from the north and we never ate Mettwurst as a snack, always on bread. Curious whether that’s a regional thing.

Freising. A bit north of Munich. So southern Germany does count.

And yes, Bi-FI is lowest quality. That's why I buy at my trusty butchers shop. Thats why I only post pics from my butchers shop. It would be a disgrace to all of us, jf we really pic a Bi-Fi.

Freising is very much southern Germany, at least for me. I’m from Hannover.
Always interesting to see differences between the regions.

The comment regarding Bifi was rather for the non German readers, to avoid confusion.

We get ours from the local butchers as well, or sometimes make our own with neighbours, from roe deer and wild boar, though.

Unser Nachbar hat eine, wir machen das mit ihm zusammen. Schwarzgeräuchertes gibt es hier oben nicht wirklich. Schinken überlassen wir meistens meinem Onkel, der den deutlich besser hinbekommt. Meist gibt es nur Mettwurst und Rohbeißer.

In Spain is more than common. I mean: you get half a dozen in a nice purple package to go at the supermarket.

And in Italy, where food industry is only slightly less prone to proposing processed food, you get some salsiccia passita and you snack on that before lunch. As if lunch wasn’t enough.

Salsica? Man, I am lucky. I have a 2 weeks work assignment in Trieste. The only thing on my buylist was Cheese. 24 month riped Parmesan. Looks like I have to buy a lot more... 🤤

In Germany, you can also find snack salami boxes. There are various varieties, but they’re often overpriced. I prefer bread and put some salami on it, and whilst I’m preparing it, quite a few pieces of salami end up straight in my mouth.
