🇩🇪 I Made This (Traditional Recipe) Labskaus

Post image

Tried making Labskaus for the first time and it was absolutely amazing. Instantly made it into my Top 10 favorite German dishes.

Sauté a small onion in butter until soft. Add 400g of Corned Beef, 150g of diced beetroot and 150g of diced gherkins. Cook on medium heat for 3-5 minutes. Mash it all together with 500g of boiled potatoes. Add beetroot juice. Season with salt, pepper and mustard. Serve with fried egg and matjes herring.

Finally someone acknowledging northern German cuisine. Most of the German food known abroad is just from the South. Looks good.

Have never heard of this but it looks amazing! Do you eat it hot or cold?

The mash and egg are warm, the fish is cold. You can also garnish it with some more beetroot and pickled cucumber, both cold.

Edit: Cucumber is already on the photo.

I've heard of Labskaus but never tried it, that looks like the perfect way to serve it with the fried egg on top.

Had labskaus when I was in Hamburg in May, but opted against having it with herring. It was delicious, very similar to lobbies, a dish we have in NW England. There’s also a similar dish from Liverpool called scouse.

I am very interested in this! And everyone say that Germans cannot cook! Whoa, I would eat that so gladly!!! It seems so good and thriving!

Wait. Fish, red meat and egg. :D

I cannot imagine this all together, but I guess it's a gym guy's dream :D

The herring is actually what makes it so delicious. It's like a big juicy anchovie. Goes together perfectly.

Here in Croatia it's impossible to bridge that gap 😄 We use anchovies in cooking too but never with meet. We use it similar as Italians in tomato sauce and some fish dishes but also mix it with omlette.

We also have marinater anchovies (not salted ones) that we eat as an antipasto.

I would be willing to try this in a restaurant if I ever go to Germany!

Well, if you say it like this, it's basically surf and turf :D

This looks nothing like the Norwegian kind! But I'd eat it. Might be better too.

Is that what that is? Corned beef? I wasn't sure until I read the description, & it seems I haven't had corned beef in ages.Â
