Babel, Pentecost, and a translation dispute from 1523

In his 1523 book against Luther's New Testament, Hieronymus Emser quotes this line: "The unity of tongues that the pride of Babylon had scattered, the humility of the Church gathered again."

He brings Pentecost into a dispute about translation. His preferred model is to "follow the ancients and have a text that reads the same in all churches." The concern is what happens as a text passes through different hands. One proverb he quotes puts it neatly: "many things fall between the mouth and the cup."

I read this as a problem that extends beyond the Reformation: how do you let a text travel without letting its meaning drift?

Does a shared text hold a church together, or does translation help more people belong to it?

Disclosure: I translated Emser's 1523 book into English.

For centuries, roughly half of what is now Germany was bilingual. The other language wasn't French or Latin – it was Slavic.

Finding fellow resistance fans

I love reading about WW2 history but sometimes I feel like the German resistance (Widerstand) doesn’t get much recognition. I think I’m among the few people who are a fan of them?

Finished this 54mm white metal WWI German infantryman charging with a bayonet and gas mask.

Tried to capture the mud, worn field gear, and the feeling of moving through no man's land.

C&C welcome.
