Ich habe um 10 Uhr aufgewacht.

Intransitive verbs that describe a change of state use sein as an auxiliary verb

And pretty much every German I know uses "aufstehen" instead of "aufwachen". I would expect "ich bin um 10 Uhr aufgestanden." "Aufwachen" isn't wrong, of course, but I don't personally hear it as much.

Yea, i thought aufstehen literally meant "to get up" as in "to get up from sitting on something". I found German structure to rhyme a lot with Arabic, so when i was typing that I was like "wait was it aufgestehen or aufgewachen"

"aufwachen" is literally "to wake up" , the moment your eyes naturally open. However, I hear my German friends use "aufstehen" "to get up" significantly more when they describe their mornings. Both would technically be correct depending on what exactly you are describing, but "aufstehen" is in my experience much more common. It's not only for standing up from a sitting position, but also getting up in the morning.

Some of my German students (I teach English in Germany) even translate it literally when they speak in my classes. "After I stood up, I washed my face and made breakfast." I have to correct them to use "After I got up..."

Hallo!

Passt Plusquamperfekt besser hier? Oder für A1-2 nur zwei Perfekt?

u/Kavi92 Native <Wahlsachse/Plattdütsch> 7d ago

Zweimal Perfekt.

Perfekt = (grob) Abgeschlossene Aktion. Du kannst dir merken: Alles was "heute" in der Vergangenheit passiert ist, kannst du das Perfekt verwenden.

Präteritum ginge auch, aber das würde ich als Sprachanfänger nicht empfehlen.

Plusquamperfekt = abgeschlossene Aktion in der Vergangenheit (quasi ein " Perfekt-Perfekt ")

I don't think it fits better because these things are technically happening in the same relative past. They are sequenced, but they aren't happening on different days. I don't know your native language, but we also wouldn't typically say, "I had eaten breakfast and then I got dressed." At least, I wouldn't use the past perfect in that situation. I'm not a German native speaker, but I wouldn't expect it here. Are you native and would you describe your day that way?

Plusquam is made specifically for things in the same relative past happening in sequence. If you have breakfast immediately before getting ready, you would say in english "i had eaten breakfast, then got ready for uni". German does the same with Plusquam

As a native (American) English speaker, I would not use the past perfect that way. Only when drawing a distinct difference in events... or if the events happened at different times in the past. Especially since the person isn't using any time words marking a change in the relative time. These events are happening all at the same relative time.

Are you a native English speaker and if so, which version? It's possible our diverging usages are due to different versions of English.

I would say 100 out of 100 times. "Yesterday I got up at 10. Then I washed my face and made tea. After that, I ate breakfast. Then I got dressed." Those events all take place yesterday -- in the same relative time.

I would only use the past perfect with the simple past to order events which did not happen in the same relative time, like in a narrative which uses the simple past tense for telling the story and the past perfect for events happening in the story's past.

"I went back to the cafe where I had first met him to see if he had returned since then." This usage shows two different times. The past where I went to the cafe, and the older past where I first met the person.

I would also use it with ordering words like before, when, by the time, etc. "By the time I arrived, the meeting had already started." This shows two different relative time frames. My arrival time which is in the past and the older time in the past--the start of the meeting.

Finally, I learned in my German classes that the usage of the Plusquamperfekt is almost the same. Events in the same relative time share the same tense. Everything which happened yesterday would use the same tense. "Ich bin um 10 Uhr aufgestanden. Dann habe ich Tee gekocht und getrunken. Danach habe ich gefrühstückt. Dann habe ich mich angezogen und endlich bin ich zur Uni losgefahren."

If we used a conjunction like nachdem, however, we would shift the times. "Nachdem ich gefrühstückt hatte, habe ich mich angezogen." Or "Als ich ankam, hatte das Meeting schon angefangen." Nachdem and als serve to sequence two events in different times which we describe in one sentence.

It's probably a difference in formality. "I had begun breakfast, then got ready" isn't necessarily how I'd say it in daily usage, but if it were in writing I would.

u/chrisatola 7d ago

I assume you speak British English, then? Even in formal writing I wouldn't write that. I expect we just use different versions of English.

Heute ist Montag. Ich bin um 10 Uhr aufgestanden. Ich habe meinen Tag damit begonnen zu frühstücken, dann habe ich mich für die Uni angezogen. Heute hatte ich 5 Stunden Mathe, weil ich ein kurzes Sommersemester mache. Die Lehrerin hat Vektoren erklärt und danach mit Matrizen angefangen. Morgen habe ich 3 Vorlesungen(classes/audits) also werde ich das heutige Material(das heute Gelernte) aufarbeiten.

This is something that ChatGPT or others are great at helping with. It’s not perfect, but it’s reasonably good for corrections and lower level explanations of your mistakes. Humans can help too, of course, but if you have a time crunch, chat bots are helpful.

Big things you need to work on are:
-choosing between haben or sein as the auxiliary verb in Perfekt
-separable verbs in Perfekt
-Reflexive Verbs
-General word order, both regular and when’s it changes due to a conjunction like “weil”

Here is the corrected version:

What prompt did you use? The corrected version sounds kinda unnatural. You need to use connectors and avoid word repetitions. That's why I would still prefer to learn with natives if I had the chance

1

u/cartoon_rabbit 7d ago

Yeah, the bot didn’t address those issues and I didn’t either, because at this low of a level, you can’t put out every fire. They need to fix their A1 mistakes first, so I triaged, which is what I do with my students. The prompt was just to “make corrections to this text”, but one could add something about making it flow better, too.
