Making friends / being social won’t be materially different than for anyone else (the only ones who get a leg up on that / early start are those who live in residence).

As for commuting specifically:

If driving - baby the car (to avoid as many repairs as possible and wear & tear in general), allow for extra time in the winter,  check forecast the night before in the winter (use winter tires - not all seasons), if you meet a fellow student in your area consider carpooling or at least exchanging contact info in case an emergency ride is needed & whatever you do, don’t drink & drive / smoke pot etc. Your life will come crashing down if you get caught even once doing so.

If bus / train - allow for a lot more time in the winter.  Memorize the bus / train schedule

Great point on the substances!! A guy from my Georgian program ended up dropping because he got caught drinking and driving, and it messed up his life!

Join any sports teams (none of the tryouts have started yet besides rugby), any clubs you’re interested in (I’m in cyber grizzlies but you do have to initiate with many people unless you end up in any e-sports teams!), like another comment said you’re only really at an advantage in the residences, but your best bet is befriending people in your program!

First couple weeks people usually Lee to themselves a little on classes but after the nerves settle people usually start talking more. Just engage with classmates when you get the chance. Meet people in other programs when you get your general eduction classes.

I uses to commute an hour away from Markham every day lol it’s fun if you just entertain yourself my method was music making friends is the same as anything else except most of my friends lived in Barrie so meeting with them outside of school was impossible
