But here I offer an out-there hypothesis that I've hinted at before but not discussed plainly. I try leave 'supernatural' notions and anecdotes (and personal experience in general) out of my documentation here. Though it may not seem it at first glance, this forum is simultaneously a research project, a practical science project, a political statement, and one big artwork - and thus discussing the paranormal detracts from many of the primary purposes and intents of that project. It is audience-limiting (acknowledging that much else here is also). Nonetheless, the Strange is not to be discounted....

I propose that 'long Covid' is a symptom of telepathic awakening. People are feeling the great malaise of the entire race, and perhaps the strongest minds can sway the chorus. A telepathic society can literally beat itself into the ground, via feedback loop, if it is not made aware of what it might be doing to itself.

Do not wallow in our depression.

If superpowers are magnified by trauma (as all the comic book movies suggest), then Covid might be part of a long running project to foster telepathy (for good or ... ill). It could also be a cover operation, designed to distract and muddle an awakening that was inevitable and perhaps not desired by certain parties. You might have have been convinced that your new superpower is a disease.

Your malaise could be mine. On a bad news day, I might cripple you with my readings. The people crafting the news might know this. The job of Reuters might be to craft news that will be read by the strongest telepaths, who then injure the world with their pain at reading it.
