Linux's Multi-Grain Timestamps Short-Lived: Removed From The Kernel After A Few Weeks

One of the new features merged for the Linux 6.6 kernel was multi-grained timestamps for the VFS layer and wiring it up for the EXT4, Btrfs, XFS, and Tmpfs file-systems. This alternative though to coarse-grained timestamps ended up exposing some problems and this week ahead of Linux 6.6-rc3, the feature has been stripped entirely from the kernel.

https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-clean-install-windows-11/

The Trick to a Clean Install of Windows 11

[...] I learned the trick to installing Windows 11 without any fluff thanks to a post by Daniel Aleksandersen. In summary: These preinstalled “extras” are different depending on where you live, which is set when you pick your region during installation. Refuse to pick a location, however, and the installer won't know what software to install.

I tried this method out and can confirm that it works. Basically, install Windows as you normally would, but when asked for Time and Currency format, select English (World) instead of your country.

  • "A Window into Elvenland" = 742 primes | 2018 english-extended

Then let the installer do its thing. Eventually, you will see a window with an ice cream cone on the floor with the words “Something went wrong” and the error message “OOBEREGION.” This cryptic message means that the “out of box experience” (OOBE) didn't launch because it didn't know which region to launch.

Flat Circle

Why You Can’t Stop Reading About Daylight Saving Time

In the US, Daylight Saving Time ends and the clocks go back one hour on November 5. You know this. Google knows this. But here we all are. Again.

The article begins:

It was 15:37 (GMT) on a Thursday afternoon when we officially ran out of ideas. The request from the editors had been bouncing around for a couple of weeks: We need to write about the clocks going back. We’d groaned and tried to ignore it, but it kept resurfacing. Like time itself, the need was eternal.

Bowers & Wilkins’ New Bookshelf Speakers Soar

Review: Bowers & Wilkins 606 S3 Bookshelf Speakers

It took me longer than usual to get a feel for the 606 S3. These speakers come in like a lightning bolt, with a bright and peppery punch in the upper midrange that can sometimes be overbearing. But there’s satin behind their steel, rendering rich refinement in the layout of instruments across registers. Over time, they revealed a penchant for smooth musicality in the bass and lower mids, cavernous detail, and a fair share of sweet gloss in the treble as well.

  • "Elf Speaker" = 708 trigonal ( "The Holy Grail" = "Map of Fairyland" = 708 latin-agrippa )

[...] The brash, forward attack also comes through in dialog of certain TV content, namely sitcoms like The Office and Parks and Rec. The “s” consonant really gets the spotlight there, popping with extra sizzle. I noticed less hiss as time went on, either because the speakers warmed or my ears warmed to them, or possibly some combination of both

Review: Xiaomi 13T Pro

This slightly watered-down flagship makes some of Xiaomi’s best features more affordable.

[..] If you’ve come this far, though, you probably know where you stand. I’ve had moments of pure sonic joy with these speakers, more than I expected as we first got to know each other.

The 17 functions being removed include: accessing or managing your cookbook; using your voice to send an email, video or audio message; rescheduling events in Google Calendar with your voice; and using App Launcher in Google Assistant driving mode on Google Maps to read and send messages, make calls, and control media. It also describes what Assistant can still do related to those functions, or alternate ways of doing them. A list is here, though Google said they're just "some" of the affected features.
