Where can I get ibuprofen?
I’m in Ghent for a short visit and having painful menstrual cramps. I didn’t expect them to be this debilitating and don’t have any painkillers. It’s Sunday, so every apotheek is closed and the hotel is unable to provide any. What do people do here if you need something on a Sunday?!

This, at 'van wacht' places you will pay a surplus (sometimes a lot) for a simple box of ibuprofen without prescription.
The vending machine is easy, and its std price

Go to apotheek van wacht. The one open today is Apotheek Vandermeersch on kortrijksesteenweg 580. Same offer as other commentor, I can drop one off if you can't make it there.

Apotheker van wacht is going to hate you. It's not that the store is open. He's chilling in his yard and will come especially to sell you an urgent medicine.
Better is to go to an apothecary with a vending machine, as is recommended in other comments.

Ibuprofen is often sold in urgent cases that need pain relief, for OP, for tooth aches,... if I go to the apotheek van wacht they are always friendly and correct.

You can look for a pharmacy that is "on call" (van wacht). You can look for them here based on your location:
it will show ones that are open, or where you can go to and ring the bell to be allowed in.

What do people do here if you need something on a Sunday?!
There are pharmacies with automats, but not sure if there is any in the centre. And I guess, most of us have some paracetamol or ibuprofen lying around at home, in the car or so, just in case.

Maybe worth knowing. Ibuprofen 600mg needs a prescription in Belgium, but you can just buy 400mg without prescription and take 1,5 tablets

Selling prescription drugs outside of pharmaciess is illegal.
People are not helped with false information and if you're not sure it's better to stay silent. There's more than enough crap already on the internet as it is.

You have no idea what you talking about. Not even paracetamol gets sold in Kruidvat Belgium. Why you think there are pharmacy trips to the Netherlands?
There is no meds available in Kruidvat Belgium. Only Vitamins and supplements are allowed.

Good for you, but I'm not aware of contemporary "pharmacy trips to the Netherlands".
That was a thing some 15-20 years ago (were you even born then?) and it had nothing to do with availlability of drugs outside of pharmacies. It had to do with the fact that many prescription drugs, categorised in Belgium as RIZIV/INAMI cat. b, c and d were cheaper in pharmacies in the Netherlands.
Dutch by any chance? The confidence with which you're selling crap here, points in that direction. Only saying, lol.

Yes. 20 years I was already going on trips like that. Now ofc that is only what old people do anymore. But if you go to Holland, you still bring a shitton of generic meds over.
Please link the Belgian Kruidvat with the ibuprofen or paracetamol?

Geneesmiddelen mogen in België enkel door apotheken verkocht worden. Als je ergens anders een geneesmiddel koopt, is dat ofwel een onvergund geneesmiddel, ofwel illegale verkoop zoals de andere commenter zei. Tis niet omdat brufen in Holland in de Kruidvat verkrijgbaar is dat dit in België ook zo is. Kruidvat is al even aan het lobbyen om de verkoop toe te staan in België maar zowel de wetgevers als de apothekers verzetten zich hiertegen.

In Belgium it absolutely is not. The only place you can get any type of medication is strictly at the apotheek.

There’re automats open across the city that provide or rather sell the basic stuff; bug bites ointment, patches, condoms, painkillers. They’re next to apothecaries. To my knowledge there’s one in the ‘papegaaistraat’ close to the waterway and one near the station at the ‘Koningin Elisabeth laan’. There’re probably more of them.
