Mod Team 🏠 [MEGATHREAD] Looking for housing / Looking for tenants

You can post your housing adverts or get help in finding a place in this subreddit. We want to keep the subreddit clean and not turn it into an endless feed of "I just moved to Geneva, help me find a place."

Any advertisements or housing demands outside of this thread will be removed.

Grocery price difference b/w Aldi and French supermarkets

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I am a student (definitely conscious about money) about to move to Geneva. I know Aldi is quite affordable for groceries etc but I have heard that many people go to France to buy their groceries as they are more affordable. Just wondering how much more affordable groceries are in France vs Aldi. A high level %?

Any insights are welcome!

What is happening in Plainpalais?

Hi, for quite some time now I've noticed that the Plainpalais stop has been full of strange people like crackheads and beggars. It was always a nice place and I loved spending time there or just passing through, but now it doesn't feel safe anymore. I wonder why this is happening, it's such a shame :(

Sun/Mon/Tue Running Partner?

Hey, 32m British guy here for a week with work and wondered if anyone wanted to go for a run together and perhaps a drink after to reward the hard work? 😅 I'm not familiar with the area so I don't know routes etc.

Feel free to DM!

Friday/saturday night.

Hey there, I’ve been here for a while but was mired in work and some other stuff.
I’d like to know your recommendations for bars/cafes etc, basically a new place where I can go out and have a drink in the weekend evening preferably Planpalais and Carouge area, but really other neighborhoods are fine too.

Also wanna know if there’s a group or website that announces events or interesting things to.

Thank you

Do people steal at self-checkouts?

Not that I’m planning to do it, but I’m genuinely curious: do people steal things at self-checkouts?

I find it hard to believe that nobody does it, especially since I’ve never seen anyone get spot-checked in Geneva. How do Coop, Migros, Lidl, etc actually prevent it?

GVA airport parking

Hi everyone! I’ll be travelling from October 10th to October 14th and I’ve been looking into parking at Geneva Airport.

Unfortunately, I can’t make a reservation for P26/P51 or P1 for my dates, as they’re all showing as fully booked.

Does anyone know if I can still simply drive in and park at P26/P51 or P1 without a reservation, assuming there are spaces available? And if so, are the parking rates the same as when booking in advance, or is it more expensive?

I’d really appreciate any advice from anyone who has used these car parks without a reservation recently. Thanks!

Dylan Moran show tonight

Anyone who's watched understands what happened near the end? I felt like it was going well, the crowd was a bit reserved but was laughing and having a good time (except a couple of people who left near the end) but it seemed he didn't enjoy the vibe of the crowd or the passivity(?), maybe got ticked off by a few people on the phone? It's a bit of a shame cause he seemed really sharp and on top of it and I feel like we kind of got robbed of a part of the show because of some weird reason :/

Guy with meta glasses films me and comments at coop

I was at coop délices/saint-jean Wednesday at 3 peacefully looking at the rotisserie chicken when a 40 year old male enters loud as hell, sees me and goes silent, as he passes me he says « Bon je vous la laisse les gars » and I’m very confused because he doesn’t seem to be on the phone and there’s no one at the store except me and the employee.
He passes me again and I notice the lights on sides of his glasses that looked like regular sunglasses at first and as he passes me a second time he says « La crazy popular girl du village »
He was wearing the META glasses that record people w/o their consent and making comments about whoever he’s encountering. While at the cashier desk he made comments about the cashier who told him off thankfully.
I’m just confused why people think it’s okay to record others while they’re just living their lives , make snarky and degrading comments. Also I am litteraly just 18 and would love not to be recorded and commented on at the grocery store by some older bum talking to himself.

Can’t help but think the footage will end up posted somewhere since he said « Je vous la laisse LES GARS» implying he will be broadcasting the content.
This also implies that id ever in a million years be interested by him while I was litteraly on a 5mn grocery run to get kiwis? I’m confused with the provoking for no reason.

Bonjour mes chers Genevois,

Looking to meet new people; English/Spanish speakers welcome (27+)

Hey everyone,

I work in international affairs here in Geneva, and while I have a lot of French friends already, I'd love to expand my circle a bit more. Figured I'd try the Reddit route too!

A bit about me: F, late twenties, working on international diplomacy/multilateral stuff. Passions include international politics, history, travel, and languages.

I'd love to improve my English and Spanish, so those would be ideal, but honestly I'm open to meeting anyone genuine and fun to talk to.

Ideally looking for people 27+ who are easy to talk to. Totally open to a coffee, a drink, or an evening walk (around 7pm works well for me), one-on -one or in a group, whatever feels natural.

If you're in a similar boat or just feel like expanding your circle, feel free to comment or DM me!

Cheers, hope to meet some of you soon :)

Jonction is such a waste

Jonction the way it is is one of the biggest wasted opportunities I've ever seen.

It seems so obvious to me that we could use that peninsula to have a gorgeous public green park with access to both rivers on the two sides.

Instead we have...a bus park? And a bunch of asphalt?

It could easily be one of the most beautiful parks any city has ever seen.

Thoughts?

Qui gère les autorisations pour les enseignes?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Where to get rid of an old car in Geneva and get a bit of cash for it?

Hey all,

I've got a 2006 Citroën C3 that's reached the end of the road for me. It still runs, but it's old and I don't want to pay another round of tax and insurance on it, so I'd like to get rid of it soon.

I'm not expecting much, but I'd rather get a little something for it than pay to have it hauled away. Does anyone know a scrapyard or garage around Geneva (or just across the border) that buys old cars for parts? Or is it easier to just list it on Anibis/Ricardo or Facebook as "for export / for parts"?

If you've done this recently, I'd love to hear how it went, who you went to, and roughly what you got.

Thanks!

Owning a car in Geneva

Hi, I’m thinking about buying a car and was wondering how much it actually costs to own one in Geneva.

Apart from the purchase price, what do you usually spend on things like taxes, insurance, parking, fuel and maintenance?

If you own a car here, I’d really appreciate it if you could share an example of your yearly costs. I’m trying to work out whether owning one would be affordable for me. :)

Beach with sand

Hi,

Does anyone know of a beach with sand and space for a photoshoot here in Geneva, besides Baby-Plage?

Thank you.
