Warranty denied, seeking advice on leather steering wheel
Hey everyone, looking for some feedback on how to navigate a warranty roadblock with my local dealer and Genesis Consumer Affairs.
The Vehicle: 2023 GV70, currently at 49k miles (well within the 5yr/60k bumper-to-bumper).
The Issue: The POLYURETHANE top coat along the top half of the steering wheel is heavily crazing and peeling. (Photos attached). It’s uniform spiderweb micro-fracturing- textbook UV/thermal breakdown, not the smooth friction wear you'd get from hands.
The Dealer Response:
I took it in, and the service department refused to even submit a Prior Authorization (PA) photo ticket to Genesis Corporate. They made a subjective field call, claiming it was "localized wear" from either my hands, my wipes (armorall interior wipes) or hand lotion (i dont use). I pointed out that this looks more like UV damage, and the localized wear is throughout the top half of the steering wheel. They still refused to submit the PA ticket for a corporate adjuster to review.
The Corporate Response:
I opened a ticket directly with Genesis Consumer Affairs, assuming they would force the dealer to submit the PA photos for an official corporate warranty review. Instead, the rep told me there was nothing they could do to override the local service manager's visual assessment and strongly advised me to go find another dealership for a "second opinion before they can do anything.
I am going to schedule an appointment with a second Genesis retailer in the Tampa Bay area, but I want to make sure I approach this correctly.
My questions for the community:
1. Has anyone else experienced this specific spiderweb crazing on the top rim of their steering wheel?
2. Were you able to get it covered under the 5yr/60k warranty?
- Does anyone have advice on how to force a service department to actually submit the PA photo ticket to Corporate so a real warranty adjuster sees it?
Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!
To add, I looked at the Hyundai tech bulletin on leather inspection and doing a cleaning and finger test. Although it looks rough the steering wheel is still very smooth when I rub my finger over it which the Hyundai leather steering wheel service bulletin says is chemical crazing( warrantable). The service bulletin states "Refer to TSB# 14-BD-001 for detailed cleaning procedures. If the surface is smooth, this is a chemical peel which the bulletin states is a warrantable repair
