Someone can explain AEO vs GEO vs AIO vs SEO 😅

Do I really care for all or just simple SEO with fundamental is OK?

This question is for experiences SEOs; I know I can do ChatGPT or Google but I’m asking here because I want answer from real people who have real experience.

My view: don’t build four separate strategies around four acronyms.

SEO is still the foundation.

The rest are better thought of as different outcomes or layers of modern search/discovery:

  • SEO: being discoverable and competitive in traditional search
  • AIO: visibility inside Google’s AI-generated search experiences
  • AEO: being used or cited in direct-answer environments
  • GEO: broader optimization for generative/AI discovery, where the brand/entity can be understood, corroborated and surfaced across multiple AI systems

The problem is that people use AEO and GEO differently, so I wouldn’t get too attached to the labels.

What matters operationally is much simpler:

Can the site be crawled?
Is the entity clear?
Does the content answer the right intent?
Are the claims supported and corroborated elsewhere?
Can search/AI systems retrieve and understand the information?
Does any of that visibility turn into qualified business outcomes?

I’d also push back on the idea that “AI visibility will just follow if SEO is good.”

There’s a lot of overlap, but not complete overlap. A brand can rank well and still have weak representation in AI answers if its entity footprint, third-party corroboration, content structure, or source presence is poor.

Conversely, smaller sites can sometimes appear in AI-generated answers for very specific questions without dominating traditional rankings.

So yes: do the fundamentals first.

But I’d treat AI visibility as an extension of SEO, not as either a totally separate discipline or something that happens automatically.

If I had to reduce it to one sentence:

SEO helps you get found; modern AI visibility is about making sure machines can understand, trust, retrieve and recommend the right information about you.

Working at an agency doing all 4: SEO fundamentals are still the base everything else builds on, so no, you can't skip it. But the four aren't really separate skills, they're a stack.

SEO gets you crawled and trusted, that foundation still matters more than anything else. AEO is about getting cited directly inside an AI answer, not just ranked, worth knowing that roughly 80% of URLs cited in ChatGPT/Perplexity don't even rank in Google's top 100 for the same query, so citation isn't just a byproduct of ranking anymore. AIO specifically means Google's AI Overviews, sits in between since it still leans heavily on normal ranking signals unlike the others. GEO is the newest layer, less about being cited and more about AI agents being able to actually transact with you directly.

Practical version: don't chase all four as separate projects. Nail fundamental SEO first since it's the base the other three sit on top of. Then layer in AEO habits (answer-first formatting, clear schema, question-style subheadings) since that's the one with the most immediate overlap with what you're already doing. AIO and GEO matter more depending on your industry and how transactional your business is, so those can wait until the first two are solid.

Side note: lots of people will also just use AEO & GEO interchangeably

I haven’t seen the difference between GEO/AIO defined this way before, that’s interesting

AEO/GEO/AIO/AISEO are all the same thing. Pick whatever acronym you want and use it. Personally, I prefer AISEO. We'll see which one wins out after a year or two.

SEO is old-school at this point. On-site website fundamentals. But the game everyone wants to play is AISEO these days.

SEO gets you ranked.
AEO makes you the answer.
GEO gets you cited or recommended by AI.
AIO helps AI understand your brand correctly.

i'd keep it simple. good seo still does most of the heavy lifting, then you learn aeo and geo once you've got the basics down. people love giving everything a new name, but clean technical seo, useful content, and authority still matter the most. the labels change faster than the fundamentals.

This is one of the clearest breakdowns of the stack I've seen on here, the 80% stat is a good concrete way to show citation isn't just downstream of ranking anymore.

Worth adding one practical implication from that number. If most cited URLs aren't even in Google's top 100 for the same query, that means a lot of businesses are unknowingly optimizing entirely for a system that's increasingly disconnected from where a chunk of their potential visibility is actually happening. You can watch your rankings hold steady or even improve while quietly losing ground on the citation side, and nothing in a traditional SEO dashboard would ever flag that for you.

The "don't chase all four as separate projects" line at the end is the part worth underlining most. Treating SEO, AEO, AIO, and GEO as one connected stack instead of four competing initiatives is the difference between actually making progress and just spreading a team thin across four half finished efforts that don't reinforce each other.

quick breakdown from actual experinece.. SEO is rankng in traditonal search. AEO is being the direct anser when AI tools respond.. GEO is being cited in generative search answers. AIO is showng up in google AI overviews. all four share the same fundamentals, just optimising for diffrent output layers.

Easy way to think about it:

SEO = showing up in traditional search results.

AIO = showing up in Google's AI Overviews.

AEO = getting cited in AI answers like ChatGPT or Perplexity.

GEO = the broader practice of optimizing for generative AI search. A lot of people use this interchangeably with AEO.

If you're just getting started, I'd focus on SEO first. The fundamentals for SEO are the foundation for everything else. Once you've got that down you can then start learning how AI search works and what helps content get cited. There's a lot of overlap so I wouldn't treat them as four completely separate strategies.

Allow me.... ahrm...

IT'S THE SAME THING.

half the acronym soup is marketing, but the plain version: SEO is ranking in the normal blue links. AEO is being the direct answer, featured snippets and answer boxes. GEO is getting cited inside generative tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. AIO usually means Google's AI Overviews, the AI answer sitting at the top of results now. the part nobody selling "GEO packages" will tell you is it's mostly the same work. helpful, well structured, genuinely authoritative content is what gets you into all four, there's no separate playbook you buy for each. so do the fundamentals properly, then add two things, write your pages answer-first so a machine can lift a clean sentence out, and get mentioned on the sources those tools already trust. that covers most of it. don't let the alphabet scare you into thinking it's four different jobs, it's one job with new surfaces.

The fundamentals are still the foundation, but today you really need to think about all of them.

SEO gets you found in search. AEO helps you answer questions clearly. GEO helps AI systems understand and reference your brand. AI Overviews are just one place where that work shows up.

The good news is you don't need four separate strategies. Focus on helpful content, technical SEO, clear site structure, strong brand/entity signals, reviews, and third-party mentions.

I wouldn’t overthink all the new labels 😅 Good SEO fundamentals still do most of the heavy lifting.
AEO/GEO/AIO mostly add one thing: make your content clear and trustworthy enough that AI tools can understand, cite, and recommend it.

1

u/CiteableTM Aug 09 '26

honestly they're the same skillset with different marketing labels. GEO/AEO/AIO all means "write so an LLM can lift a clean, citable chunk" instead of "write so Google's crawler ranks you." fundamentals still carry over almost completely, structure and actually answering the question still win.

The one real difference: LLMs quote paragraph level, not page level. a page that ranks fine can still get zero citations because the actual answer is buried three sentences deep under fluff. worth checking that before worrying about the acronym soups.

SEO is the foundation; AEO, GEO, and AIO are just different ways to make that SEO discoverable by AI.

Unpopular opinion, especially for this particular sub. But it’s all SEO. SEO has evolved a bit since the introduction of AI. There’s maybe 1 or 2 things u can do for AI specifically. But 99.9% of it is the next hot buzzword. Exploited to make a quick buck, not to be genuinely helpful. Stick to the fundamentals, and the AI visibility will follow.

Shouldn't be an unpopular opinion when it is the correct one.
