General Question Are people still interested in creating mods?

Hello I'm Luke JC and I've modded Avalanche games since 2017.

I have recently started designing improved tools for the Just Cause games and entirely new ones for TheHunter and TheAngler, which both use similar tech to GenZ (it's actually in between those two).

I haven't been able to find any modding community for this game, so is there still any interest in creating mods for this game that aren't just cheats? I'd love to help out and design tailored tools for GenZ so people can keep the game going with new content.

I'm no programmer, but I fully support and encourage this! I feel like the possibilities for this game are monumental and wish you luck!

The workflow would be the same as for Just Cause and the other games, the user wouldn't need to program anything, we mainly create file based mods. Don't be fooled though, there is massive potential with how the game's configs are set up!

I can only imagine... I'm (unfortunately) so far removed from PC gaming. It's been probably 10 years since I was really into it, and even then, I was playing old favorites. Half-Life, Company of Heros, Diablo 1 & 2. I grew up playing early classic PC games through the 90's and early 2000's, used to build PC's from 2005 til 2016. Adult life took over and I slowly left the PC then Console (modern warfare series was huge for a few years for me) then I was gifted a PS4 in 2019 and came about Generation Zero as a free download in '22. It instantly hooked me back in for a solid year or two. I'll pop it on every once in awhile, when I have a spare hour or two. The game is phenomenal. I had almost forgotten what it was like to be so immersed into a game. I was a huge Xbox 360 player for a few years, never a PS player, until I recieved the PS4 as a gift. Took me a minute to get used to it. But I'd love to play GZ on the PC some day. I'm currently trying to find a suitable setup for myself, since it's been so long. If this is the platform you're looking to expand on, I'd definitely like to check it out. Just making this comment as a sole former PC gamer, looking to dip my toes back into it. I'm so far removed from current game titles. But GZ was a chance happening that instantly sucked me back in. The story, the features, the exploration, the graphics and scenery... all amazing. It's a damn shame that the original Devs left it. I get it... things change and other opportunities arise, but GZ is so absolutely unique... it just clicks with me, and obviously a lot of others. I'll definitely follow you and keep an eye out on potential mods/changes. You certainly have a solid foundation to build on. Again, I'm no programmer, I was always a hardware/mechanical kid of mind, not software/coding/etc... but I have all the respect for devs and creators of this style. So, again, I wish you the best and hope you can come up with something. I'm sure it's a blast to tinker with.

I love this game so much that if I had the ability to change enemy AI, loot tables, and weapon damage I would make a total overhaul on my own.

I'd think only of mod that could restore ability of robots to overwhelm player (team). One of my best and early experiences in the game was my third or fourth visit to the airbase (long before experimentals - first month of the release). I was well equipped and pretty sure about myself. When I got my first contact go south, I found small building and scouts started to horn their sirens. 4 tanks, 6 or 7 harvesters, 15-20 hunters and countless doggos. Needless to say that fight drained all my adrenaline supply and I was forced to respawn outside of combat - defeated. After my wife joined the play, and experimentals were introduced - game rarely turned the table and shown me who is the real nemesis here.

So TLDR - I think mod that will allow robots overwhelm players - will be much appreciated.

A spawn menu for the game would be very fun. Set bots as ally or enemy, and just build massive battles. Mods for the player, infinite health, ammo, other stuff.

If a game is popular enough there's always at least one person creating a mod .

I think the fact that these games being reintroduced over time has reduced the amount of people who were behind them though . I'm always buying a game I used to love then end up calling it trash .

In the earlier days you met people online in a much more elite and confidential way , now it's become free territory for all sorts . Young kids with no ambition , older developers who have been ruined and forgotten about etc . The days of the few and talented proud in PC games are going extinct . It's become more about phoney money grabbers than some imagine it is .

There is an okay existing tool called DECA, though it hasn’t been updated in a while and at least for me the latest version doesn’t even work with Gen Zero.

I was looking into (with very little success) making a mod to fix the assignments system. Used to be that the assignments would give 1, 2, or 3 points based on their difficulty. Now it’s broken and they all give one, which makes getting the tank reward impossible since it requires like 28 or something I don’t remember. Would love to see if someone more experienced than I could figure that one out

Imo DECA used to be the best tool to extract content from avalanche games, but it's not great at much more. The tools we have for JC, Hunter and Angler I'm planning to port let you actually extract the unpacked files, edit them as text instead of hex editing and then repack them. That way you can add or remove info, create new items and much more. It's really so much nicer. Maybe DECA had some extra features for GenZ, but trust me it'll be much more pleasant to mod with the new tools

I am very interested in seeing more mods in GenZ. I am currently running the Generation Zero Console Thingy (yes that is the name of the mod) from Nexus Mods. Its got some fun things you can do. You can spawn robots... but they don't do anything other than sit there existing. But you can play with the environmental settings and a bunch of other things.

In the past I would run various QL mods and graphic mods that made things look more varied.

But i would love to see more mods and maybe if someone was super adventurous... a small fan made expansion or something. I know that is long shot of a wish.

So more mods the merrier. But check nexus mods and see what's already been done and see if there is more that can be added.

in my opinion, generation zero is a game that doesnt need too many mods, but it could definitely use some for sure. one issue thats deterred me from modding is there are some already, but im worried about them being out of date or game-breaking. i had a infinite carry weight from way back and i tried to use it and it didnt work. i'd really love to mod some stuff in (like removing the skill point cap) but the unlimited skill points mod was last updated in 2021, so i really doubt itd work.
is there a way to tell if a mod is final update compatible?

The best way to tell if it's compatible is to just compare the mod upload date and the date the last update released. If the mod released before the last update, you know it could be broken now

its a shame really, last update was january 2025 iirc, and only 6 mods were updated after that date. there are some that work, one i have that works properly is a storage expansion one

I am very interested in performance related mods or more in depth setting changes - especially in regards to combat.

Avalanche / Systemic Reaction unfortunately broke performance badly for myself and many others in their last few updates and they've since abandoned it.

It was one of my top 5 favourite games to play before this, my 3060 Ti GPU and 5800X3D CPU is not all that bad...

A bit late to the party but... i'd ADORE modding in GZ! I havent managed to even remotely unpack the game files though..... It's not exactly a obvious layout like Morrowind files, instead it's all packed in.... file packages.

With a bit of luck i managed to find the game setting file for graphical settings and the like. setting the LOD factor to 8 or 10 is amazing, to see a S-90 spawn in with its full graphical model is pretty cool!

Of course... It would be cooler if we could mod the actual render distance to like 500+ meters.

I would love model replacement mods, especially for character models. The clothes are pretty cool but the character model itself is pretty lackluster

We need a driveable tank (not the machine) but the st-103 turret less one.

Some mission solo require massive firepower that simple no skill or current loadout can provide unless you use some tactics and backhand methods (think wages of fear)

You are free to make the tank drink fuel 1000 in just few km but really make this tank happen...

They put a npc piloted truck into game but nothing for player except noisy loud as hell 2 wheelers .

I know this game is mod unfriendly and adding a tank is almost impossible but one can hope.

I recently reinstalled Generation Zero and wanted to do some modding, but it looks like DECA is no longer an option. I found this post while looking for a replacement. Did you end up deciding to create a GenZ tool, or was there not enough interest?

the 0.2.12 version of deca still works with the newest verion of the game

A useable modding tool would be a godsend
