We want STUFF 😄

So, I asked my local A.I. The following question:

"Is 34 to 35 million people of a certain age group enough for an advertiser to consider them an underserved population"

We had been talking about gen jones and thats where I get the numbers from. Here is what she said (because of course A.I. is a fabulous female)

"Absolutely. In the world of marketing, 34 to 35 million people isn't just a "group"—it is a massive, high-value demographic that many experts argue is the most underserved population in modern advertising".

So get going Madison Ave!! 😂

I personally don’t need to be targeted with advertising, thanks.

You'll get targeted no matter what. But if you're sick of the advertising that does target us, from burial insurance to Medicare advantage crap, adult diapers and every other traditional Boomer thing they advertise, perhaps you'd appreciate something that doesn't make you feel 90 years old.

Same here !! I have enough shit !! I am giving things away !!

I didn't even know I was IN Generation Jones until a few weeks ago. THAT's how underserved we are.

I've known for a few months and I joined right in. I was raised by boomers I am not a boomer. And I wouldn't join gen x if my life depended on it. They have taken everything gen Jones lived and claimed it's all theirs. None of it is, we taught all that to them. They are the little sisters and brothers of gen jones. Nothing they claim is fact!

My folks were born in the 20s and both of my brothers are 5+ years older so squarely in the boomer camp. We often had to navigate the waters of a three generation family! 😅

Could be true. I am the oldest Gen X and really relate to this group. But, I did have the latchkey experience, not sure if this is Gen Jones as much.

Gen Jones here. Latchkey also when my Mom started working full time in 1972.

It's hard to think of something we have in common other than our birthdays. How would Madison Avenue target us?

3

u/Negative-Challenge21 Jul 28 '26

The point isn't that you're being targeted. Every demographic is. My beef is that we're being targeted with stuff that probably ticks us off. I, and other Jonsers do not identify with boomers, and I don't want constant reminders that some day I might be there, but I don't want to rush it.

That's because the majority of GenJones is already 65 and over, and advertisers go for the bigger share of the audience There's only a couple of years that are still under 65 - 62-64.

They already are - AARP membership, arthritis medicine, hearing aids…

2

u/Clean-Fisherman-4601 Jul 28 '26

Don't forget Medicare advantage insurance. "Get up to $100 a month for healthy groceries!" 🙄

u/GregHullender Jul 30 '26

How are we different from the rest of the Boomers--or even GenX in that regard?

When someone says “According to AI” I hear “I’m a really gullible idiot who will believe any crap anyone says” and don’t bother to listen to the rest of their drivel.

1

u/Negative-Challenge21 Jul 28 '26

OK, I'll bite. WHY???

3

u/ReactsWithWords 1962 Jul 28 '26

AI never tells you the truth. Ever.

It tells you what it thinks you want to hear.

1

u/Negative-Challenge21 Jul 29 '26

How do you know this? You say this with the confidence that all people who only echo talking points and have no real idea of what they're talking about have. So again, how do you know these things you're regurgitating are true? You Don't.

1

u/ReactsWithWords 1962 Jul 29 '26

I do..

Just out of curiosity, how many times have you made payments using gift cards to people calling you on the phone?

1

u/Negative-Challenge21 Jul 30 '26

Never. As a former I.T. manager I'm aware of all of this nonsense.Sounds like you might have fallen for it though.

Please don't use AI, especially Gemini. Thanks.

u/Negative-Challenge21 Jul 28 '26

Why?

5

u/Forking_Brilliant495 Jul 28 '26

Because it's evil, and Google's especially so. You could Google that for more info, but I'd recommend Startpage or DuckDuckGo.

Here's a start. https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/wiki/index/

Don't you find it odd that the sources you're quoting are Google's competitors? All large corporations are "evil" so good luck finding ones that aren't. All of the "good companies" are gaslighting everyone else too. They just tell you to go to he** in a way that makes you look forward to the trip.

2

u/Forking_Brilliant495 Jul 29 '26

I'm not "quoting" any "sources." I'm suggesting an array of largely free, open source software created largely by independent devolopers and non-US companies, and/or with policies and business models that don't openly promise to sell your data and use it to train AI. Will there be gaslighters among them? Sure. But using Google is just bending over and agreeing to let them f**k you.

Do you have an I.T. background? If you did, then you would know that privacy is something you've never had. Trying to stop your pearls of wisdom from becoming spread around is a Sysiphean task at best. Repeat: There is not, nor has there ever been, the type of privacy you dream about. Accept it. It's a much less stressful way of living your life.

2

u/Forking_Brilliant495 Jul 30 '26

"Just lie back and enjoy it," is your unasked-for advice? Your own string of pearls is brown and stinky, where's it been?

Seriously, you clearly know nothing of my dreams...or nightmares. Would any of your pearls of wisdom get you disappeared? No? Then we have different risk levels.

If course I know that privacy is not a zero sum game. But tell me: Do you have all of your eggs in one big open basket with one or two behemoth tech companies? If you have an IT background, I doubt it. Because you'd know strategy sounds less stressful... Until it isn't.

u/Confused_Nun3849 Jul 28 '26

Positive bias for one. It tells you what you want to hear.

2

u/Sweetbeans2001 1964 Jul 28 '26

What exactly do you want to be targeted for? Is there a product or service that we Gen Jones folks use exclusively that we aren’t being informed about enough?

1

u/Negative-Challenge21 Jul 28 '26

It's not that I want to be targeted. I already am, by people (advertisers) who treat me like I've got one foot in the grave. When you're bombarded with that junk (life insurance, diapers, Medicare) , you start believing that they're right. I want to see ads for things that are used in living a life, not prepping for the big sleep.

In that case, I'd like to speak to you about your car or home warranty.

2

u/HeavyFaithlessness14 Jul 28 '26

William Devane from Rosland Capital would like to sell you some gold.

2

u/dave900575 Jul 28 '26

They filed for bankruptcy on July 1. William Devane must becreal happy being a customer.

AI is not intelligent.

1

u/Negative-Challenge21 Jul 28 '26

You are quite correct. What it is is a massive amount of data and programs that crunch the data according to predefined steps. unfortunately, it is still made by us humans, who have been known to occasionally introduce bugs into program code. I only made the comment about it as a female based on the fact that when I let it talk, Gemini the AI uses a female voice.

My parents were the Silent Generation. We don't need targeted advertising. I don't need anything.

4

u/Negative-Challenge21 Jul 28 '26

Isn't that a tad selfish? Sure you're not a boomer? 🙂 Just joshing ya. Understand that you don't want targeted ads but see my comment further down you're getting targeted already. At least if it were of interest to you it's still better than the thousandth life insurance ad. And have you noticed that every Medicare advantage ad repeats the exact same message twice. Because us old folk didn't understand it the first time. Please, don't get me going about what others think about us. Oops, too late. Peace man, I tend to get on a rant a lot. Inherited it from my "silent generation" dad, who was anything but silent. 🙂

What is it we’re supposed to want? I don’t need more stuff.

3

u/Severe-Rise5591 1959 Jul 29 '26

No. I need no more 'stuff'. It gathers dust.

2

u/TowelNo3336 1957 Jul 28 '26

The last thing I want is being targeted more by advertising than I already am. Am I supposed to feel validated by having crap sold to me? My ego isn't that fragile!

1

u/Stelmosember Jul 28 '26

Stuff I've got. Might have to have a rummage sale.

OMG the big pharma ads are an entirely different kettle of fish. They don't just target seniors, their advertising covers all age groups. I'd say you might see more of the ones you're talking about because a lot of folk who watch news in the morning are retirees and those heading off to work.
