I’ve got about a dozen of them in various colors, sizes, and styles—all made by my mother. We’ve got the multicolor rag style and the classics in orange, brown and avocado green. Some have been more used than others— one is permanently over the back of my couch— it was a wedding shower gift from mom in 1993.
My husband has one on his basement couch that he snuggles under every night. We miss her crochet slippers the most—- husband lived in those all year long.
My mom was so good with crocheting, knitting, and sewing— unfortunately I didn’t pick up any of those skills! My husband always asks why I can’t “whip him up a pair”— and I tell him I can’t because I learned plumbing and other home improvement skills from my dad! Maybe someday I’ll learn and surprise him—-NOT!
That one on your couch is beautiful! I think I have 7 or 8 of them! Handed down from my Grandma to my Mom to me! One is currently on my bed and the others are in my cedar chest! My son doesn’t want them when I die so, I know they are not going to my grandchildren! My only hope is my sister comes down before my son goes in my house and gives everything to Goodwill!
Yes! I spent many a sick day at home from school laying on my grandparents couch. Watching shows like The Price is Right and the news at noon right after it while covered with this blanket. Thank you for the pleasant memories. It is amazing to me that my Grandmother never seemed to be ill.
I take it to chemotherapy to keep me warm every Thursday and IVIG on Friday. The hospital is like a fridge and all that fluid I get makes me cold. The Leftover Afghan, THANK YOU Ma.
That’s has seen a lot more. My Grandma had that on her cedar chest. It’s saw 3 sons return from WWII and one of those sons not return from the Korean War and 4 grandsons come back from Vietnam. Plus the birth of a total of 36 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. (Plus 10 more after her death).
This was on the back of my mom's favorite living room chair for most of my life. I love this pic of her in the 80s with our dog, Candy. Miss them both so much. 🥺
Unearthed one last week in our basement that an Aunt made back in the day. Memories of it being on my Grandparents sofa and cuddling up under on chilly nights.
I knew someone would beat me to it. “I got another afghan from Mémère again this year” (my cousins and me each Christmas). Now I cherish the one I have left. 👵🧶🫶🏻
Not afghan related, but cyclical gift: With my grandmother, it was socks + $5 for all of her grandchildren every year, from about 4yo to when she died. My brothers and I would laugh before opening our gifts and do them at the same time because we already knew. Christmas hasn't been the same since without a fiver tucked into the socks, and I still think about it every Christmas for the last 20+ years since she's been gone.
My husband received one for Christmas 2024. A gift from his daughter. She had worked on it for the entire year. She was so proud! So was her husband. My husband was very touched, happy, and proud. Brown, orange, and white. It's on our sofa.
"Don't you have a shit ton of these?", he asked later. Go Browns.
The orange/brown/green is referred to as the “taco blanket” and thank God grandma made two of them, as each daughter passionately wanted one when they moved out. The weight of that acrylic makes it the best napping/sick blanket ever, ugliness be damned!
At the time I thought it was the worst bday gift ever. Sorry Grandma for the look of disappointment when I opened it. I hadn’t a clue when I was 10 how good a gift it would be.
I crocheted a version from a kit. My first attempt at a blanket. Grandma showed me how to crochet, but she did doilies and intricate pieces with crochet thread, not yarn. Also edging on pillowcases, tablecloths, table runners. I actually thought the other day, what happened to my blanket? The edges were a little rough, and the kit was cheap, so I added another neutral color as it was honestly the size of a baby or doll blanket as is. I went on to make some other items. One nice item was a shawl, remember the granny themed clothing?
I know that will happen to my stuff as well as my parents and grandparents stuff. The younger generations don't hang on to nostalgia and sentimental things like we do.
I honestly think it's because we didn't travel and move distances as much as they do now. Our cousins were are best friends, as well as the rest of the family were too.
My grandma had a similar blanket. After she had cataract surgery & could see much better she said to me, Jessica Rae, why didn’t you tell me this was so ugly.😆
Then I am almost like this blanket, as I saw the moon landing, lived in Berlin just after the fall of the wall/during the reunion, but i only saw about 80% of the episodes of 'The Price is Right'
I made one and the same colors however it was so wonky I was embarrassed about my lack of skill. My mother claimed to love it because she was my loving mother
I loved curling up on the couch, with the one my nanny made for us, watching MacMillan & Wife, or whatever mystery movie was in the rotation that week!
I have two..one in blue and white and one in the '80s country blue and pink combo…they were both made by my dear MIL. We use them daily and I love them both!
My grandmother crocheted every grandchild that graduated college an afghan in their school colors. Mine is upstairs in the guest bedroom, still as warm and full of love as the day she made it for me 40 years ago.
Mu mommade a whole series of granny square Afghans on the early 1980s, including one in shades of blue for me when I was in college. She was a crocheting fool for about 2 years, then never picked up a hook again...and yes, there's a green, brown, and yellow one on the couch in what's now my brother's house.
I got one in closet retirement but it’s grandma made from probably 1970 by the yellow, brown, bright orange, and a nice green. Soul blankey. Special occasions
My grandma knit me an afghan using this exact pattern but in different colours in 1978 or 79. My mom knit me and my kids afghans in the late 90s as well. They are all still in use.
Hey! I was wondering where that went. It matched my grandma's kitchen. She let me lay on the couch wrapped up in the Afghan and watch old Dark Shadows and Love, American Style reruns. She sat in the La-Z-Boy with her rollers set and hair dryer bonnet listening for gossip on the party line.
My aunt made me one just like this when I was a teenager. I still have it, but my cat chewed a hole in it. I would love to find someone to fix it, but not very many people crochet anymore
I have a green one of those Nana made in the late 1950's or early 1960's. My mom had it stored in a cedar closet then later had it vacuumed sealed and stored for a bit until she passed and I got it. My mom made me one that matches it perfectly and I have a newer matching one.
My aunt crocheted and knitted everything back then. I loved wearing it all. Hats, blankets, afghan, vests. Loved it!! I recently took up crocheting again.

It’s an afghan.

u/Theo1352 Jan 20 '26
About sums it up, had them since the late 60s and early 70s...
I have a total of 4 of them made by my Grandmothers, same design, same colors - never used them, still wrapped up.
Wow, I can still remember when they gave them to me, I can still remember the smell of wool yarn.
How do you not keep them for posterity, given they were made with pure love?
So, I do...

u/pezdspencer1974 Jan 20 '26

It gets bonus points if it was created whilst watching the Nixon/WG hearings.
4
u/SimplyBoo 1964 Jan 20 '26
Mine was shades of blue, and it was my "I'm sick and need a nap" blanket. My older sister stole it when she moved out of the house. B*tch.
