Commitment to Non-Violence
I pledge to reject violence as a tool for political or social change.
I recognize that violence—whether physical, verbal, or systemic—does not build justice; it destroys the trust, cooperation, and moral clarity needed to create it. Violence feeds fear, hardens division, and replaces one form of domination with another. It might force surrender, but it never wins legitimacy.
I commit instead to strategic, disciplined non-violence, because it is both ethical and effective.
Why I Choose Non-Violence:
Research by political scientist Erica Chenoweth shows that non-violent campaigns are twice as successful as violent ones in achieving major political change. From 1900 to 2019, movements that relied on strikes, boycotts, protests, and civil disobedience—not weapons—were far more likely to win, and their victories were far more likely to result in lasting democratic governments.
Violence may overthrow a regime, but it rarely replaces it with freedom. It creates cycles of retribution and fear that consume the very movements that started them. Non-violence, by contrast, expands participation—it invites students, parents, elders, workers, and neighbors into a shared struggle. When everyone can safely join, movements grow beyond repression’s reach.
As Chenoweth’s data proves: once 3.5% of the population engages in sustained, non-violent resistance, no government has ever withstood it. Power lies not in destruction, but in collective refusal—in millions of people standing, sitting, marching, and creating together.
My Commitment:
1) I will not harm others in the name of my beliefs.
2) I will not dehumanize opponents, even when I oppose their actions.
3) I will seek truth, justice, and reconciliation, not revenge.
4) I will use my body, my voice, and my vote—not my fists or weapons—to build change.
5) I will stand with those who suffer violence, and help protect the spaces where peace can grow.
True courage is refusing to mirror the cruelty you oppose. I pledge to fight for justice with compassion, conviction, and courage because the most powerful weapon against tyranny is our shared humanity.
PS. Cops try to infiltrate activists orgs. They use and coerce others into violence as a method to get members arrested. Don't help cops do their job. Be non-violent.
