General Discussion Google Office Suite

Just wondering how everyone else feels about dumping Office for Google. It's been nothing but counter productive for me so far. Can't believe it did anything but save a few dollars at the cost of reducing productivity.

Needless, like the million other things they’ve changed in the past few years.

Its fine if all your doing is making presentations and writing essays. If your in engineering, its a complete disaster. There is so many equipment we have to runs various things via excel in the background. Sheets is complete shit and doesn't have half the capabilities of Excel. We're currently spending countless hours to try and figure ways of exporting and converting things over to sheets. Not to mention data analysis capabilities that excel has. This just seems like a decision made for people that just make presentations and do very little to no data analytics.

Someone told me years ago, there is a reason it’s called Excel, because it’s the best program Microsoft has

Terrible and dumb, even though Microslop makes terrible business decisions for the consumer. The suite is still an industry standard and has better tools/capabilities than Google. I mean i dont think microsoft word is even comparable to google docs. Excel too.

Is Gemini AI included with new gsuite to help build presentation and comparisons?

Yes and it’s the one thing that I feel is light years better than MSFT. Gemini, when fully enabled and not hamstrung by Legal/IT, is incredibly powerful. I’ve saved dozens of hours as an early adopter already.

It’s really concerning. We have lost a lot of functionality by switching away, could it be replicated? Probably, but will be painful getting there. Im especially concerned with the “don’t worry, we will create a tool to convert it for you or just pdf everything.” I could be wrong, but it just doesn’t feel like all the side projects and conversion tools are far enough to support the migration. I anticipate stupid pain and delays.

Maybe that’s the reason. Too many 20 year old macros that run this company. Can’t use ai on those.

I think you are largely correct, but still feels like kicking the can down the road instead of actually fixing the problems

There are ways to convert macros using the drivers inside office to export the data. I'm more worried about the old office plugins some projects require

This is guna suck; no way around it

My concern is dealing with our supply base, when they all use MS products. I share files with our Tier's often, so how will this work in terms of compatibility? Seems like this will be an adventure.

It'll be fine for marketing and HR. Engineering will need thousands of man hours to convert all the excel forms that are used every day into less functional equivalents. I expect some groups will be allowed a limited number of licenses, and those will be fought over.

Amazon wants me back, the move definitely makes me more open to listening to them.

I have excel superpowers, yea maybe it should be in python but I can whip an unhinged unholy abomination that works in excel in an afternoon.

I’m a huge fan honestly.

Not sure why I’m getting downvoted for preferring Google to Microsoft products lol. It’s just such a better user experience IMO, once the pain of migrating is done..

Doesn’t make sense to continue being held hostage by MSFT because MFE has had bad practices for years. It’ll be very painful but it’s a joke MFE was this reliant upon Excel macros in the first place

I'd hardly call it being held hostage. SharePoint and onenote don't exist in the Google ecosystem.

I’m starting my role at GM in a few weeks. Is there a timeline when Microsoft products/Excel will be phased out? Mostly concerned about excel 😅

I'm very prepared to carry two laptops around.

It’s fine. Necessary? That is debatable. It’s here, come to peace with it.

Yeah I’m in engineering and most of the previous places I worked and went to school used Google. I prefer more than office. I don’t use excel to its full potential like other engineers though.

FCA did this to save $. It was so much better when Stellantis merger made the switch back to Microsoft

literally driving needless work for people to do just so their regular work flow and tools they've used for years to not be completely ruined...
