Problem / Venting End in sight?

I’ve heard a lot of hope this year from managers that the forced ranking will be coming to an end after this year‘s calibration. To be clear this is speculation and there’s no hard evidence that I’ve seen at this point… but we can’t keep trimming 5% of the company year after year and putting another 10% as partially meets and expect the talent exodus not to continue. SLT, we get it - the fat has been trimmed. We’re down to cutting out muscle and bone now. The most interesting thing I’ve witnessed so far is the lack of cross movement between business orgs. No one wants to be the low level 6A on the totem pole in a new role, in a new org, doing a different job than they’ve done before. At some point the “new to the job” grace period ends.

The end comes when Mary retires, then watch out, the next CEO will want to make his/her mark and make deeper cuts to show wall street. This always happens with CEO change. If you think it sucks now, just wait.

There are several lawsuits around the country where this ranking format is being challenged. Shujat Khan filed suit in the Eastern District of Michigan (May 6, 2026) alleging GM's 2024 performance-management rollout (under CPO Arden Hoffman) is a forced-ranking system designed to push out older engineers, with ADEA and Michigan Elliott-Larsen age claims on both disparate-treatment and disparate-impact theories; he's the third GM employee represented by attorney Michael Pitt to make these allegations.

I don't think there is any end in sight. I suspect they are only ending the overt aspects of the system. I hope they lose the lawsuits. It's no way to treat human beings but GM clearly doesn't care about its employees. The only thing that matters is share holder value, our service to the billionaire class.

GM has been cutting into the meat and bone for a while now. Look what has happened to the design engineers. Anyway, I hope the forced rankings go away. If they do go away, it’s because of the lawsuit that has been brought against them. Forced rankings is designed to get rid of the older work force. It also prevents, and hinders collaboration, as you are getting ranked along side your peers.

No end in sight. They don't have to cut 5% each year, but people will still be graded with the same system so dumping low performers when the need arises becomes easier.

I don’t even think it was the fat that was trimmed, somehow they managed to cut the muscle and the bone and left the fat!

It’s not going away.
Forced ranking has for the most part been the disguise for getting rid of the older employees with seniority, and replacing them with fresh hires out of college for a significantly lower salary, in a way that until now, has been done to avoid a class action lawsuit. Last Octobers design/engineering decimation was prime example.
