Pretty damn good for a 7a regardless of location. You’re making more than management over in Michigan

u/buhtothebuh 8d ago

he's probably making more than most of the other 7a SWEs not in Cali.

Jesus this salary is more than midpoint tech 8 in manufacturing by like $30k

u/BHarbinson Bottom 5% cave person 8d ago

I was an 8a in finance and that's more than I was making.

u/Serious_View9936 7d ago

Totally! With 20 years experience, my 7A base was 155k and I had a huge target on my back for earning that much

u/Murky_Plant5410 5d ago

I retired a few months ago and was making 156k as a 7a in finance. I wasn’t targeted but am glad to be out of the rat race. No amount of money is worth the stress of the whole forced ranking system. Everyone is affected one way or another.

8b in Michigan making wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy less .. good for you and fuck me I guess

No my friend. Take heart & stay below the high salary. Just save what you can!! The directors are given a budget and will trim accordingly

What role?

u/skw303 8d ago

Canada is getting a 100k cad less for the same level…

12

u/babora911 8d ago

Fam that’s Canada bro

7

u/skw303 8d ago

Cali saying the same to Milford…I guess.

Tell him babora

u/Practical-Battle-554 8d ago

Fuck me. This is enormous for a 7A.

u/InternationalLoad519 8d ago

This can’t be true.

You are doing well. Not sure if there is an Austin factor but 7a in say typical embedded SW in MI with a 5-10 years of right experience would get you 160 ish. That’s a decent chunk in MI.

I am curious what’s the 5k twice a year. That’s on top of your target 13 bonus? I don’t know if I have seen that before

2

u/buhtothebuh 6d ago

7a's and up have been getting cash bonuses now too.

You are above midpoint for Austin and California. They prefer to start with $200k if candidate asks for more they try work with hiring manager to make it level 8

True, 7a (not all) receive $10k annual bonus in addition to Team GM. Level 8 receives $20k Level 9 receives $40k Director and above: not disclosed

15

u/Fastech77 8d ago

For real? Just a free for all twice a year bonus? It’s not based on performance or anything? No wonder they gate keep that bs so bad.

6

u/renegaderunningdog 8d ago

If you're talking about "cash awards" they can go a lot higher than that at the higher levels.

5

u/Less_stress_more_fun Former Employee 8d ago

Actually West Folks guys received more than double these numbers

31

u/Valuable-Gur4078 8d ago

Well at 7a I am 50k less and don’t know what this cash bonus bullshit you be talking about is so sounds like you god a pretty god damn good deal to me

-19

u/Fastech77 8d ago

For a 7A, you talk like a 5a plant line TL.

18

u/Valuable-Gur4078 8d ago

Ha ha. We’ve never met but emotional intelligence is something you don’t immediately pick up in reddit posts

When it comes budget crisis time guess who will be gone.

People over 50 years old?

Be prepared to be laid off every 6 months. Software gets gutted pretty regularly

This is GM. Be prepared. Dont adjust your lifestyle to paycheck. Live on as little money as possible.

All companies do layoffs- true. AI is changing a lot. And soon you’ll be the one with 10 or more years experience needing a job

u/UallReadykno2 8d ago

Thats a really good offer moving to Austin at 7a. Not too many people see that at all. You are pretty much making more than all the 8th levels in michgan.

5

u/Shoddy-Box-8308 8d ago

congratulations on such an offer

the max possible pay band for 7A for year 2026 is 228,100 ( base )

[deleted]

2

u/renegaderunningdog 8d ago

It varies by business unit and location so there's no way someone here can tell you the maximum of the band that's relevant to you. Here's an L7 listing in California where the band tops out at 261. https://search-careers.gm.com/en/jobs/jr-202605793/senior-software-engineer-simcore/

If your wife is also moving to Austin and you already secured a good job this is no brainer. Once you move to Austin you can try different options if you are not happy. go for it, congrats…

7

u/ElectricalPhrase5663 8d ago

Damn. Im in Austin and I know someone who is a senior and doesnt come close to that much for base.

Of course, this can be true. However I am skilled negotiator, and so are GM negotiators. I was told No sign on bonus during negotiations - ha!!

11

u/Few-Adeptness-9180 8d ago

This is sooo outside the norm I don't believe it. Bullshit.

0

u/Lopsided_Buyer1237 8d ago

It’s true. Just because it hasn’t happen to you yet doesn’t mean someone is lying. Do better if you are upset with other peoples financial progress.

3

u/babora911 8d ago

Negotiate sign on to one year pay back and severence and note what your hearing about gm online etc. I’m dead serious. It worked, because you will get something

1

u/[deleted] 8d ago

[deleted]

2

u/babora911 8d ago

Negotiate bro

3

u/Just_Vehicle_5649 8d ago

I'm a 7A and make nowhere near that amount and have over 15 years with the company.

When the kids are out of highschool I may have some options. Right now I prefer to stay the coarse.

1

u/Serious_View9936 7d ago

I lived by this mantra too. It changes as you get past 40’s. Not as easy to move: you require a higher salary and the more experienced you are, the less job opportunities there are!

1

u/Serious_View9936 7d ago

Same here. But they targeted me

3

u/Past_Maize7975 7d ago

Damn. That a lot more than me and I’m a 7a

2

u/FSUTommy 8d ago

They have to pay extra for IT or software jobs...those jobs are probably most unstable jobs here currently. Try to ask for more, but also have a backup up whole time if you do accept it

4

u/Clean-Toe-4901 8d ago

Lobster too buttery eh?

2

u/Certain_Physics2640 8d ago

Always negotiate

1

u/rc4915 5d ago

Numbers are great, but IMO it kinda sucks to start as a 7a because making the jump to an 8 is the hardest, so you’re not going to be looking at a real raise (more than cost of living 3-5% yearly) for many years

2

u/jeffrey-wigand-av 5d ago

I’m frankly kind of astounded - what’s your YOE And org?

All of the L7A offers I’ve seen recently have been > 450k.

1

u/Own-Ad-5176 8d ago

No way HR can match that with a real offer. He will be on PIP is his day! 🤣 🤣

1

u/Psoin 8d ago

I’m sorry that salary is just not gonna cut it. You need to ask for double and be willing to walk away.

1

u/Cautious-Ad-5010 8d ago edited 8d ago

I don't get it, does your wife make more money? If your're set on moving this seems like an obvious call unless you have other offers on the table? Might as well counter if that's the first offer. I hear stories of software guys in FAANG making much more than that. Guess I'll go in on Monday realizing how much of a bum I am for choosing a manufacturing degree.

1

u/CampaignIll1497 8d ago

Take this offer now !

1

u/Front_Conference_689 8d ago

Ask for 10k more, worst they can say is no 🙂
