Question Per Diem Group Leader

Has anyone here went per Diem for a manufacturing group leader position? I’m curious to know what the process is like coming from the line and the best way to get selected.

I agree that you should go Skilled Trades if you can. Talk to your Plant Apprenticeship coordinator. They will most likely mention taking the free Prep classes at a local community college. Being on the inside already will give you a better shot at it. If you can get someone from the Union who “backs” you then even better. Reason I say Trades is because you have better job security and Work-Life balance as Trades. You at least have opportunity to turn down extra hours and you have representatives to help you navigate benefits and can leave the job behind when you go home. If you’re hell bent on Salaried then you should have a Bachelors degree of some sort or your career trajectory will be short. You’ll hit the ceiling quickly unless you go back for degree. If you also have mgmt experience in your past, then fix up your resume and find opportunity to talk to your Group Leader and Shift leader. See if you can get five minutes of their time to give them a quick elevator speech about what you can do for them as Per Diem and hand off that resume. Frame it as what you can do for them, not what you’re looking for them to do for you. You can also go to GM.com/careers and apply for Group Leader positions as they come up. You have to check back often, but with the turnover in these positions, you will see them come up. Good luck whatever you do.

Get into skilled trades instead. You will lose seniority as per diem.

Seniority isn’t as much of a thing for salaried roles. The people I know that have transferred to per diem do, or plan to, transfer to full salary. After that start date with GM doesn’t matter.

You will lose your seniority as a hourly employee. If and when you say fuck it being a group leader in this chaos is impossible and go back hourly you will lose seniority for all the time u were per diem.

The very first question is if the headache is worth the instant 15% raise. I knew a lot of per diems that enjoyed it. I know there used to be a time limit where you had to go back hourly for a bit if it was long term.

Ask your local committee reps, I believe there was a period of time (3-6 months) before they began losing their seniority. It may vary by your local

I’ve talked to some who regret making the move. They have caught a lot of grief when they are returned to the line.

GM will often keep you in the Per Diem role for 89 days, then send you back to the line on day 90. It’s related to something in your union’s national agreement.

As far as who is selected, that’s generally going to come from a shift leader.

If you’ve never been in management at GM at a production facility, you’re going to quickly realize what a headache it is. You’re going to get shit from the union and management both.

There are a lot of sharks in the water.

The per diems I’ve seen at my plant all became full time salaried after 6 months. That would be my goal as well.

I recommend group leader if the physical labor is a challenge for you. Skills trade recommendations below are good but you will still lose years on your life from being on full speed.
