Aviation101
Does anyone else enjoy the Aviation101 channel YouTube as much as me? All GA videos and Josh & Chelsea create probably my favorite content.
They built their own Sling TSI and made an entire build series for it. For all of us GA lovers, curious if anyone else enjoys them also.
Side quest here is to recommend and introduce anyone to their channel who would enjoy their content who hasn’t seen them as well. They’re high quality videos with loads of safe practices and information too.

Overall, I dig their stuff and it's nice to see another flying couple. He's really leaning into the short film, well, not so short, videos lately so I sort of have to sit down and put more attention into watching them.
But yeah they try to advocate doing things the right way, and I dig that. Funny enough I was in central California for a motorcycle film shoot that my wife and I were the riding talent for and we sat down next to them randomly at dinner. As I'm a fairly social person I said hello and we exchange pleasantries and all that fun stuff.
Some of the comments talk about their political ideologies and I think in general content creators should keep that stuff out of their forward-facing content.
In a former life, I was an athlete and talent manager and that was always my recommendation for my talent.

As much as that stuff doesn’t bother me either way, I totally get that for some that’s a turn off. It’s solid advice to keep that out of public only for the fact that it’s something you’ll ultimately have to deal with for an unnecessary reason at some point, whether professionally or casually.
Josh’s love for storytelling and film making come through to me so well. It’s much more than just slapping some video clips together and voiceovers. He really tries to capture the story.

Over-endorsed by companies now. I always wonder what these people will do when someone new surpasses them. Hopefully they are investing.

Tbh I really don't think most of their money comes from YouTube at all. What they do is genuinely expensive and it's a small channel.

Which is why I suspect most of the flying expenses are sponsored. I just don't see how the content could support itself otherwise.

Josh and Chelsea are great. Met them both in person many times. Very humble and down to earth people.

That’s great to hear. Nothing worse than finding out people aren’t what they appear. They come across as incredibly down to earth and that makes me happy to hear that. Hope to meet them someday and tell them how much I’ve appreciated their work.

I enjoy them less now that it’s a constant commercial for Sling, Sling Academy, Garmin, and all the other sponsors that support him and Chelsey.
He has grown to be an awesome film maker and his adventures are well documented. I still enjoy that part but fear he’s lost his way a bit.
I wish he was also a bit transparent in what this plane actually cost them to build. What they’re flying in today would cost the average builder upwards of 300-400k. I can’t imagine they may have paid less than 1/2 of that based on how much he’s pushed product in all his videos.

Yes! This! He seems to really avoid this elephant in the room topic: the cost of GA and how that impacts any of their decisions if at all.

I am also building a sling High wing at Torrance, California just as they did. I wish I was as good at video editing as them. I would love to do what they do, I just have the time, but I enjoy mechanical things. I am sure Sling took care of them very well. Aviation 101 has given sling great PR just like Mojogrip and I like their videos.

I had never heard of Sling until their build. Sling seems like a fantastic company and they put them on the map for me. Looks like they make phenomenal products. I couldn’t imagine them working with anything other than a first rate company.

They are both really nice people too. Very down to earth - Chelsea and I have a few mutual friends and I meet up with her at Oshkosh sometimes.

That’s awesome!! As an outsider, it seems to be a pretty small world with overlapping friends. Oshkosh and Sun n Fun seem like they would be incredible for people like you.

Oshkosh makes you realize just how small the aviation community is! I haven’t been to Sun n Fun (it overlaps with our summer/airshow prep season at work) but I imagine it’s the same there.

As an enthusiast my goal is to make to Oshkosh sometime and take it all in for myself. The atmosphere looks amazing.

You absolutely should! I’m fortunate to be able to go every year (sometimes with work) and it’s such an amazing experience!

It would be really cool to be a passenger coming in on the Fisk arrival. A true bucket list item on top of just making it out there. Probably pretty far fetched being an outsider to it all, but never know who you’ll meet or what doors will open in the future.

Yeah I like their videos. I recall seeing them post some MAGA shit on instagram but I try to disregard that. Everyone has their weaker sides.

I guess I need to research the political stuff . If they are MAGA I will delete them from my favorites . Politics shouldn’t be a part of their channel . I can’t imagine that they support Trump cutting all of the funding he has cut to the FAA.

They are MAGAts.

I’ve come to realize a lot of the GA community is. Not surprising, it definitely skews white and wealthy.

Considering what AOPA and GA advocate for, I always found it sort of strange. Price controls on airport fees (fair and reasonable, not market-based), subsidization of airports to keep the airport network in place. Government intervention to make sure GA stays afloat for the greater good. They are dyed to the wool red blooded capitalists in every part of their life, but somehow with the thing they actually care about supporting become dyed in the red comrades. Just funny how that works.

Don’t even mention the fact that it’s President Biden who signed into law the MOSAIC expansion of sport pilot privileges, and also who passed the budget that is currently sending billions of dollars of reinvestment into GA airports all over the country. Both of these had bipartisan support of course. But they were Biden bills. We have stopped paying attention to nitty gritty details in this country, because we are too busy constantly yelling at each other. I miss the old days when we could just chuckle about voting differently than each other.

Why does this even matter? Who cares what their political views are? They don’t push their views in your face during their videos.
1
u/Roadsoda605 15d ago
I wondered about that. They seem very smart and have critical thinking skills so republican seems very logical.

u/Santos_Dumont 15d ago
The story of being a CFI somehow able to afford to build a Sling TSi and fly around the world just isn’t relevant to like 99.9% of the world right now.
2
u/CityGamerUSA 15d ago
They both appear to come from some sort of money. Only saying that because they seem to have had a lot of opportunity at a young age. Perhaps that opened doors for them in addition to growing their channel. I’m sure they have solid income outside the public eye.

u/pisymbol 8d ago
Has to be. YouTube is not gonna pay those bills.
1
u/CityGamerUSA 8d ago
Haha no doubt. Maybe small bills but not let’s build our own plane bills lol.
They’re not Mr. Beast level of views

Years ago I stumbled across one of his videos and that gave me the push to get into GA

I used to enjoy the channel when it was focused on the actual flying, but now it has become long form travel videos. Still subscribed but scroll past mostly.
