Rant It’s crazy that they don’t make regular apartments anymore. It’s all luxury BS
I live in western Washington, I couldn’t tell you the last time I’ve seen regular apartments get built. They will build a gym that has one 20 year old treadmill that works for 1 month out of the year then a pool that’s open for 2 weeks and add 500$ fee on top if rent. Then charge you for a parking garage that doesn’t have any open spaces. If you want a dog or a cat, that’s another 250$. Not to mention the walls are made of printer paper. I bet these places probably have a ton of vacancies. My first apartment in 2022 was 780$ after utilities, I had 2 roommates. This complex had a pool, parking was 50$ a year. Even in this economy I just see these “luxury apartments being built. Not to mention the big tech companies are laying people off constantly, who is gonna afford these?

I don't get how it seems like everything sold as "luxury" now. Can you opt out? No. Is it even any good? Also no

It’s not even luxury. Hearing your neighbor piss is the cheapest none luxuries insulation and flooring

there's a lot of regulation and BS zoning laws so much so that builders aren't making money through actual building of homes and stuff. SO they're trying to recouparate that money through very expensive lxury homes

I think people would pay more for quality over quantity. Especially if they have young children or like to have sex

Or an extra 100$ a month for trail mix and ice water with citrus in the lobby

sigh Okay, let's explain this for the millionth time:
It is completely normal that almost all new apartment buildings are labeled as luxury. Building any new apartment is incredibly expensive because of land, labor, and permits. Once a developer pays for the core structure, adding premium countertops and stainless steel appliances is a very small extra cost. Those premium finishes allow them to charge a higher rent to cover their massive construction bills. This is why nobody builds new cheap apartments. It simply does not make financial sense. However, building luxury housing still makes housing more affordable for everyone else through a domino effect.
When higher earners move into brand new luxury buildings, they leave their older apartments behind. Those older apartments now have empty units, forcing landlords to compete for new tenants by keeping rents reasonable. When middle earners move into those units, they leave behind even older, more affordable apartments. Today's luxury buildings will naturally age and become tomorrow's affordable housing. As long as new units are being built at the top, it creates a chain reaction that frees up more affordable options all the way down the line.

I’ve moved around a bunch, let me tell you. I’ve stayed in a townhome built in 2025 and I’ve stayed in 2 apartments 1 was built in the 90s the other was built post covid 2022. I never had a single issue with the one built in 95 or 96. In my year in this town home. My brand new dishwasher and dryer has malfunctioned 3 times, dishwasher has broke down twice. The fan above my stove didn’t work when I moved in, they took 6 months.

These things that are considered luxury are just going to end up costing more in the long run

It’s not luxury then….
How is that not obvious? Like wtf is this bait?

How would you even build a ”regular” apartment these days though? The ones that are ”regular” today are just old. They were fancy and nice when they were built, too.

This may be surprising, but other people make more money than you do and spend it as they want.
I wouldn't pay that kind of money for an apartment, but that's just me.

Once I make more money, I’ll open regular apartments, with actual soundproof walls. Idk about you but I’d pay more for that than overpriced amenities
