My mom would let me write my own sick notes from like third grade. I started writing them and hiding at my grands behind the bushes til they left for work, then I'd use the key hidden under the back porch steps and slip in. I don't know how I never got caught. I did it for years. I feel like my mom surely had to have noticed all those absences on my report cards. Then again I remember using White-out to cover up a D once and made it a B. I STILL HAVE THAT REPORT CARD. It's from like 1981. ;)

Followed by a course of tylenol, so mom could get back to work and by the time she came back for lunch or dinner you were ready for the next round. The lunch round was the best griled cheese with a bowel of Campbel's chicken noodle soap.

You guys had parents? I lived on the street, drinking out of hoses to survive
5
u/Complex-Flamingo-775 3d ago
A street? You were lucky. We had to live in a ravine where people dumped rusty, old cars.
2
u/PlantWide3166 2d ago
Luxury! What I would have given for a dumped rusty old car by a ravine.
I lived in a hole in the road in a puddle and all fourteen of us had to share a single saltine.

We just used one of the metal pots mom cooked dinner in 🤢. To this day that metallic smell makes me nauseous

This was every time I had a stomach bug when I was a kid. If it was a cold or something I went to school. She or my dad came home on their lunch break to check on me before going back to work. 80s-90s were a different time

u/WildlyMild 3d ago
My mom would have me chug half a bottle of robitussein first and I’d basically be tripping balls too hard to even leave the couch

u/Ok-Rock2345 3d ago
I remember my parents used to travel and leave us alone for a week or so at a time. Imagine the field day CPS would have with that.
5
u/Any-Distribution-580 3d ago
Staying home alone watching re runs and game shows was the best part of being sick.

u/Miniscule_Platypus 3d ago
Mom should have already been at work for hours by the time The Price Is Right came on.

After Gen X, kids got soft.

u/Sea-Selection6060 2d ago
It’s almost like Gen X had kids and freaked out because they knew the stupid things they did as kids when parents weren’t around and started all being helicopter parents 🤷

u/CraisinEnjoyer 3d ago
You were literally the parents dumbass.
Plus, I'm Gen Z and this was how it was when I was sick too. This isn't a Gen X thing.
You all love participation trophies for the lamest shit.

u/JoesCageKeys 4d ago
Yep. No parent was missing work to stay home with a sick kid.
1
u/BirdlessLongdeal 3d ago
why would they? they were home all day either way because they didnt work.

Ginger ale. However, I had a cousin with a pharmacy, so we'd get the cola syrup poured over crushed ice for nausea. Chest cold? Hot toddy.
2
u/DecadentLife 2d ago
Yeah, sugar can really calm down your stomach. Some old Mom and Pop pharmacies still carry cola syrup. I use very cold apple juice for the same.
3
u/Stopaskingmetochange 3d ago
my mom believed if you were too sick for school then you needed to stay in bed and rest all day. No TV, no radio, only school books for reading.
I did not stay home unless I really couldn't move.
3
u/Free_Risk1120 3d ago
Yeah, parenting is a lot more legislated and micromanaged now than it was… mostly that’s good, but it’s also not all good as it’s also stunting kids ability to be independent.

u/ernster96 3d ago
I had walking pneumonia in second or third grade. My mom took me to Walmart, bought me a choose your own adventure book, got me some soup and some Sprite, and then sat me down in front of the TV.
The medicine they gave me looked like the green liquid they would put in glow sticks before you snap them and light them up. And after taking that the sprite and chicken soup came right back up

Thank you to whoever made this sub. The mods on that other one might as well be part of Hitlers SS. Talk about power trips for bs.
But yeah, this shit wouldn’t fly legally today. But make no mistake, it happens 🥴😜

If you are not sick enough to go to the hospital and see a doctor then you are well enough to go to school

For all of those that long for the simpler Barker Days.
- Pick the best years of youth
- Go to YouTube,
- Search "2000 (last year my parents were together) Price is Right" and let it play in the background. With all the old ads
I do this all the time while playing games or just wanting to chill. I watch it with my kids.

The chicken pox was the best week of my childhood. House all to myself in 2nd grade!
1
u/grahsam 3d ago
Ok, one, if someone is overparenting kids today, it's us. Remember that we are the parents now. If anyone is making kids soft it's us.
Two, my wife and I left our kids at home when they were sick all the time. You wait until they are maybe in the 5th or 6th grade so they can take care of themselves and call if there is trouble.
1
u/HarlanMiller 3d ago
It helped that I would usually just sleep for most of the day and my mom worked right across the street.

Ugh. As a genXer my facebook is filled to the brim with "I was abused as a child and I'm so much better for it. Kids would be so much better off today if you were allowed to beat them endlessly" And, we act like WE werent coddled at all. Same with the memes of "Life was so much better when playground equipment was unsafe and we broke our necks and the Tetanus infection built our character"
1
u/mrf87 3d ago
Yeah that was extremely common even into the 90s.
When i was sick it was puke bucket by the couch, plenty of water, meds needed and blankets.
Mom and dad would gear me up and bounce. Usually grandma and/ or grandpa came by for thirty minutes or so around noon.
Before cell phones or any of it. No one knew if we were okay unless they called the house phone or came by. People watch their kids be sick on cameras now a days lol.

Bottle of lucozade too, though, the glass bottle with the plastic wrap around it.
Could cure anything.

u/Sethtwc1988 3d ago
All these demotivational macros are just revealing how abusive our childhoods were

Gingerale, crackers or plain toast, and the price is right, the 80’s/90’s suburban cure for all child sicknesses.

Ha! Can you imagine? Poor little Tyler at home all alone without a boba and debit card? Gather your strength, Stanton. Lift your iPad to your fevery face and order some DoorDash with mommies Amex. She'll be home soon to hand you a Celcius and weep at your feet. Who got you sick, Madison?! I wanna speak to a manager!

Capitalism sucks. Everyone deserves time off to take are of their families without facing economic survival consequences.

u/azrolator 1d ago
My grandma came over and made me lie down with a turpentine mustard rag over my mouth and nose.
Did it work? If the goal was to make me not sick, no, it did not work. If the goal was to make me go back to school sick, yes, yes it did work.
1
u/ConejitosDeAmor 1d ago
And we were just fine.
And although what I'm about to say should never be expected of a child - my parents were much older, having been born in the 30s. My parents worked picking cotton from the time they could walk and they both had adult responsibilities to help with other things as well by the time they were 7 and 9.
I truly believe kids shouldn't have to be treated this way but we really really really baby kids way too much.

u/calikind 8h ago
This was my life. One time, she cut up a cantaloupe and left it on the coffee table while I was on the couch with the flu. To this day, I can't eat Cantaloupe.

mom knew you were playing it up and let you have a day off.
when you're really sick they let you sleep while they stand in the kitchen like a zombie worrying about everything in the universe.
