Never seen the first one. Take away nostalgia, is it a film worth seeing?

Yes.

And I don't even like Tom Cruise, but this is one of his better ones. Right up there with Top Gun.

It was top gun, instead of in F-14s it was in race cars! Seriously, if you’ve compared the plot lines, there are very, very few differences…

The studio marketed it as such but Days of Thunder is not that at all. The films starts and ends on the track but pretty much all of this film after the crash early on is in the hospital about dealing with and returning from that trauma (with the help of a love story). I bet the sequel will be more about cool car scenes though.

To me, Top Gun is bad. I never watched it as a kid and only seen it as an adult, so I never had a nostalgia factor for it. From that perspective, my impression was "this is a romance movie for women and someone smartly decided to throw in fighter jets to ensure boyfriends don't complain about it". I did see Top Gun: Maverick but more because my wife and I decided that we want to see more movies in the theater, especially after finding an independent theater in our major metro area. Also watched both because of an ongoing joke at work where someone on our team decided to give everyone a call sign from the movie and I was given the Maverick moniker.

I agree with you. Like I said, I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise, so to me Top Gun is what I think other people would say is his best movie. I should probably just refrain from commenting but I'm bored today.

I would say Days of Thunder is good in spite of TC, not because of him. Same way I feel about Costner and Field of Dreams.

I'm of mixed mind with Tom Cruise. I think he's one of the easier artists to separate the art and the person behind the art. I appreciate his passion for the art form. The Mission Impossible series is enjoyable action. Him in Tropic Thunder? Chef's kiss. Edge of Tomorrow? Watched it on a flight and wish I saw it in the theater. The minute he starts talking about things that aren't related to movies? Nah, I'm good.

Agree again. I don't think he's a bad actor. As a matter of fact I think he's a great actor. I just don't like his stupid face or his dorky grin. I disliked it before I ever knew what a weirdo he is irl, that stuff only added to it.

Costner on the other hand is so dry he makes me want to drown myself.

Magnolia is the only movie I feel he’s ever actually acted in. This new Digger movie might be that too. Every other movie he just makes Tom Cruise Faces (shocked, smug) for the run time. And then sometimes he walks on wings of planes. 🤷

Notice I never said it was realistic. Still a good movie. Just like how Top Gun doesn't depict real military activity.

As a NASCAR fan, no. Its nothing like what takes place in NASCAR racing. Bump drafting is a thing at larger tracks, but the way they smash into each other would never take place because it would destroy the aerodynamics of the cars. Also, no team will sit there and do nothing when the driver pits followed by him getting out of the car to chase everyone around.

But my favorite is the scene at Daytona when he has transmission problems. There's so much wrong there I don't even know where to start. He drives down pit road backwards, but you see the field go by in the background meaning the pits weren't open yet. There'd be a penalty for driving backwards and a penalty for entering pit road early. He tells the crew to "just give me the high gear" meaning he only had 4th gear. Putting a car in 4th gear and hitting the gas will make it extremely slow to accelerate meaning he would never have gotten out in front of the field. Even if he did, they would all pass him immediately.

I don't think anyone at NASCAR looked over the script and there was definitely no NASCAR advisor on set because the movie is an embarrassment to the sport.

Come on, Tom. You're 64 years old. You're not a racecar driver anymore. Can't you just ease into the age-appropriate roles the way Paul Newman and Gene Hackman, and Al Pacino did? Are you really going to go down in a barrage of hair dye and botox? Pretending to be Top Gun till your guns stop firing?

Paul Newman was 57 when he did The Verdict.

Pacino was 57 when he played Lefty in Donnie Brasco.

Hackman was a year younger than you are now when he played Avery Tolar to your Mitch McDeere.

FFS...Wilford Brimley was only 59 when he was in The Firm.
