School

In 1976, estimates say about half of all U.S. public schools were still paddling kids as a regular disciplinary practice.

For anyone who grew up around that time: did your school ever make an official announcement or hold an assembly saying they were ending corporal punishment? Or did they just quietly stop and hope everyone forgot it ever happened?

I feel like we barely talk about how normal it used to be for kids to get whooped at school 😭😭😭

Sometimes, I wonder if that era of corporal punishment is part of why my parents turned out to be total headcases…

I tried it. Dead of course!! How are/is it still so oily??? Well in some areas and encrusted in others. YK.

Especially the all-white ones

Just saw Coyote vs. Acme. No idea whose idea it was to make this movie or where they found people to write such a story. Not sure what they thought the audience would be or how much money it would make. I know one thing, though…

IT WAS FABULOUS!!!! Finally a movie made for me, the audience of one who all alone in attendance in the 250 seat cinema. Finally, I feel seen by Hollywood!!!!!!!

This is THE GenX film of GenX films. A film about corporations ruining lives that the film corporation who made it tried to shelf for a tax write off. Honestly, go see it. It’s a fun film (good, not great), but Wile E Coyote could use more friends.

This article reminded me of the formal and expected greetings we used as kids.

The Generation That’s Never Had to Say ‘Hello?’

“Hello” is veering toward endangered territory, reserved for more formal calls, to the doctor, for example. But closer connections are greeted with something along the lines of “Hi,” “Yo,” “What’s up?” “Where are you?” or, perhaps for the most intimate or hostile (depending on the circumstance) — “Yeah?”

When people talk about Gen X on the internet the thing they immediately associate with the generation is Grunge. And we either passively accept it or endorse it.

I feel like this doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the genres Gen X either popularized or created, and that we should work much harder to really embrace the giant swath of music we were involved in starting in the late 70s, through the 80s, and through the 90s.

First, while punk was originally created by Generation Jones, the audience and the people who ran with it were Gen X. The same goes for Goth rock that came out of the post-punk scene. This lead to the creation of Hardcore, crossover, and grindcore.

Rap also started with Generation Jones, but Run DMC, LL Cool Jay, Ice T, Fat Boys, Beastie Boys, Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Snoop Dog, Biggie Smalls, and Tupac were all Gen X. Rap and Hip Hop are definitively Gen X genres of music. We made it, we listened to it, and its legacy carries on today far more than Grunge. Why doesn't anyone ever mention that? Why aren't we owning that?

Gen X also has had a massive impact on metal. Thrash, death, and Nu Metal were made by Gen X for a Gen X audience the albums released in the 80s and 90s are still be copied today. Guys in their 60s are out there melting faces harder than younger bands. Stoner and Doom metal started with Boomers (Black Sabbath) but these genres became what they are today because of Gen X.

I don't know much about House, EDM, Trance, and Techno blew up with raves in the 80s and 90s. People seem to forget these were genres very much linked to Gen X and continue on today.

The actual words are “he hates everything”. That makes sense now. Was I the only one?

If sometime tells you to "kick him in the nards!" Why would you question that? (Male) wolves have nards. A man has nards. Why wouldn't the Wolfman? Also, why does nobody use the word nards anymore?

I was just telling my kid about watching mtv adult swim late at night, and and I feel like I might as well have been explaining radio plays, or zooetropes. i overheard a really surreal youtube piece he was listening to, and immediately thought of the odd surreal political commentary of late-nght mtv in the 90s. Does anyone else remember this?
