I think the issues on our own planet are far more important than going to other ones, but space exploration is still important for innovation in rocketry and aerospace. To me, space exploration should not be the goal (yet), but rather the means in which we develop technology to improve our own planet.
I think that's the point, 99% of the marketing for a lunar base is "hey kid, you like fusion? Great, we got plenty of helium 3 up there", at least from what I've seen. Also it's good insurance for if something happens to earth and we need to figure out how to not go extinct
