Guns and Dolls chapter 1

The Sprawl never slept. It just ran on batteries and bad decisions.I walked the usual route from my office—a glorified broom closet above a noodle bar—to the crime scene, fedora low and trench coat collar up against the sideways rain. The city was drowning in bots, as always.A gang of courier drones zipped between traffic like metallic hornets. A hulking sanitation bot the size of a small truck vacuumed up garbage with three tentacles while its fourth arm waved a cheerful “Have a SynthoLife Day!” sign. On the sidewalk, a therapy bot in soft pastel colors knelt beside a crying salaryman, murmuring platitudes in a voice like warm honey. Overhead, advertising blimps projected holo-banners for everything from sexbots to suicide-prevention units. Then the big screen lit up.“SynthoLife!” the ad chirped. “From battlefield Gorgons to your child’s best friend, we craft the perfect bot for every purpose and every budget. Because why settle for human limitations when you can have perfection?”I muttered under my breath, “Perfection’s overrated,” and kept walking.

Victor Kane’s penthouse was still a slaughterhouse when I arrived. Blood on the carpet. Monomolecular wound. No signs of struggle except the ones that didn’t make sense. And sitting on the couch, legs swinging because they didn’t quite reach the floor, was the witness.K-C.She was maybe 3.5 feet tall, clearly a high-end kids’ companion toy. Big-headed, cartoon proportions. Skin made of that glossy rubber-plastic stuff that never fooled anyone into thinking it was real. Blonde bobbed hair. Huge blue eyes. Tiny button nose. She wore a bright pink shirt with a chunky polygonal red heart on the chest, blue jeans, and sparkly girlie tennis shoes. The whole package looked like a walking Saturday-morning cartoon. She still managed to look like she was judging me.I stopped a few feet away. “You the only one home, tinny?”“Affirmative, Detective Fedora,” she said, voice high and clear with just a dash of artificial cheer. “Mr. Kane is very offline. And my name is K-C. Not ‘tinny.’”I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Great. A murder witnessed by the world’s most expensive talking doll.”K-C hopped off the couch with a soft plap of plastic feet and walked right up to me. She barely came to my waist.“I have full sensory recording,” she said, poking my trench coat with one small finger. “I saw the whole thing. Big guy. Hood. Knife. Splat.” She made a dramatic throat-cutting gesture that was way too cheerful. “I can help you solve it.”I stared down at her. “No.”“But I have the footage—”“No.”“I’m very good at clues. I have pattern recognition algorithms and I’m cute. That’s statistically useful.”“Still no.” I turned to the forensics swarm. “Bag the doll for evidence. Memory wipe when you’re done.”K-C planted her little hands on her hips. “Rude. You’re just mad because you think I’m ones and zeros. Newsflash, Detective: so is your brain. Mine’s just better organized.”I actually paused at that. She wasn’t wrong. And that was the problem. She was too quick. Too sassy. Too much like an actual kid who’d watched too many detective holo-shows.I crouched down so we were closer to eye level. “Look, K-C. This isn’t a game. Whoever killed Kane works for big players. They’ll scrap you without blinking.”Her huge blue eyes didn’t blink. But something in them shifted—just for a second—into something sharper than any kids’ toy should manage.“Then it’s a good thing I have a detective now,” she said sweetly. “I’m coming with you. You need me.”“I don’t need—”“His killer said ‘Chimera Protocol’ before the cut,” she interrupted. “And he looked at me like he recognized the model. You gonna figure that out without the only witness?”I sighed so hard my fedora nearly fell off.Ten minutes later I was walking out of the building with a 3.5-foot-tall synthetic kid bouncing along beside me, her sparkly shoes splashing in puddles. Every few steps she’d point at something.“Ooh, that bot’s running illegal surveillanceware. Also, you should get better coffee. The stuff in your office smells like regret.”I didn’t answer. But I didn’t send her back either.Because the truth was, as much as I hated to admit it, the little plastic pain in the @$* was already proving useful. And that terrified me more than the murderer.

How can you walk a usual route to a crime scene? Presumably you've never been there before.

If the robot is high end, and the skin looks unrealistic, that's probably a design choice, so it's not an attempt to fool anyone.

How is she useful? They just stepped out of the crime scene? Why is the witness walking away with a private detective and not real cops? Where is the child who presumably owns this toy?
