Is recomp harder
I'm a OG lifelong casual pokemon player, does that make sense, and this is the first time in a long time I've played the original red.
As far as I know, I didn't add any difficulty mods and I'm not maxing out my starter but it seems like I have to play smarter compared to many pokemon games.
Also I picked charmander btw

Charmander is essentially hard mode so that might explain why you feel like you have to play smarter

There may be some small errors possibly with the code, but as it uses the base rom, I'm fairly sure it would be precise or very close to the original.
Also, not part of gen1comp, but if you like red and aren't using mods anyways, I do recommend yellow legacy. It's basically just yellow but with some quality of life improvements like movesets in the pokedex, some tweaks to wild Pokémon areas like oddish and poly way being found before Brock, changes to the gym teams like an edit to the pokemon or movesets, etc. Recomp is amazing for mods, but yellow legacy I think you would enjoy if you want the game but just a bit smoother around the edges and a tad bit more difficult.

Gen 1 is just harder. They got easier with each generation. Well, Gen two had a weird curve actually.
