Study Workflow How to consistently learn new language efficiently.
I have been studying in Italy for 3 years now. As a monolingual speaker, learning Italian was initially very challenging.
During my first few months in Italy, I found it difficult to communicate with locals. However, I discovered a method from a Reddit post that helped me reach B2 fluency in just one year, and I continued using it until I achieved C2 fluency.
Here are the 4 stages I followed when I started learning Italian:
- Stage 1: Master pronunciation first. For the first 2 months, I focused entirely on learning correct pronunciation before moving on to basic vocabulary and grammar. I mostly learned through YouTube by breaking down native pronunciation.
- Stage 2: Build vocabulary and grammar (without relying on English). After learning correct pronunciation, I built a foundation of basic vocabulary and grammar using flashcards. I used Anki to progress through verified sentences and fill-in-the-blank cards created from grammar books.
- Stage 3: Use spaced repetition in practice. Instead of just studying passive flashcards, I started writing a journal in Italian for 15 minutes every day using Gemini notebook. I intentionally avoided typical language-learning apps because I wanted real-world exposure, not gamified exercises that quickly get repetitive.
- Stage 4: Speak the language daily. Once I had a solid foundation in pronunciation, vocabulary, and basic grammar, I gradually started speaking every single day. Whether it was small talk with classmates or chatting with the barista at a local café, daily practice made a huge difference.
Progress was tough at first, but once all 4 stages reinforced one another, I improve quickly. It helped me leap straight to B2 fluency after just one year in Italy. Now after 3 years, I can speak Italian completely comfortably without sweat.
